Topic: Hawaiian Music For a Wedding |

I have a gig coming up in December and the reception will be a Hawaiian theme. I have two questions:
Will Hawaiian Music on a pedal steel sound authentic?
Could someone give me a list of ten easy hawaian songs that I could play on the pedal steel.

Bri,
I think you be just fine, i have played a few hawaiian licks on the E9th, it's all in the style and notes, you can use your 6th tones a lot, E's dropped.
If you pick near the 18th fret it helps get that mellow wooden tone.
There's nothing like a real hawaiian guitar, but do you want to start all over.
I say, Go for it!

Try to avoid using the pedals. Keep it Simple. Avoid the cliche' E9 twang sounds and the ringing scale patterns on strings 1& 2. Play simple and play less than you normally do on pedal steel... fewer notes. Like tb says, play mostly 6th chords. Try to play it like a non-pedal steel... more slides and slants. Instead of using pedals to play single note patterns, slide the bar from fret to fret to play single note lines. And slide into the chords with a minimal use of pedals. Also, Slants! Two note voicings with slants. Lots of reverb too.

What I meant by that... using the pedals to play E9 country twang licks is not Hawaiian, and it will not fit the Hawaiian steel guitar style. Of course, holding down the pedals to play, for example, a 6th chord will work fine for a Hawaiian sound.
I used to do fill-in gigs with a traditional Hawaiian band back when I played only pedal steel. The bandleader told me... don't play country pedal steel sounds... play simple and pretty. That's exactly what he told me, and it was good advice for that gig.

Hi tb, I have a cd out called A Taste Of Hawaii, and I did 6 tracks of songs that folk will know just for a taster.
Aloha oe, Red Sails, Byond The Reef,Blue Of The Night, Love Letters In The Sand, and Hawaiian Wedding Song.
I found, if you keep it simple, they like it that way.
