First - this song was "A Day in the Life" written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Lennon wrote and sang the verse and McCartney wrote and sang the "brdge" on the Beatles album "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Obviously, this was a "surprise" appearance by Paul McCartney at a Neil Young performance. And he came in absoluteley where he should have...singing the same bridge which he sang on the album , "woke up got out of bed dragged a comb across my head." So before you attribute Paul McCartney's "late arrival"to "weed" you better brush up on your rock and roll history.

Michael, what on earth are you talking about?? Do you think I was insinuating Paul came on late? Obviously, he was waiting for the middle 8, because that's all he sings in that song. Lennon wrote the rest. Are you a musician at all? Obviously, you're partaking in the same stuff the boys were doing when they decided to have an impromptu jam. I know more about the Beatles than I care to admit, 'cause it's almost pathetic how many books I've read on the Fab Four. Same with Neil. I actually met the man a few months ago. He's perpetually stoned, as is Paul. They like to have a good time. This is not conjecture. Anyway, the point of this post is to have a good-natured laugh at our heroes and show that these guys are human and like to have a party. When musicians smoke dope and play, it is sometimes painfully obvious. Did you see them playing the vibes at the end? Come on. Some people put these musicians on a pedestal and think they are above the rest of us. I don't do that. They're just good musicians and writers who happened to make it big, that's all. There are lots of talented people in the world. These guys just happen to be famous, and sometimes they make me laugh with the way they behave. My friends and I laugh at our heroes all the time, and make fun of them in a good-natured way. That doesn't seem too popular on this forum sometimes. Can at least one person tell me they find it funny to make fun of their heroes now and then??
This thread was certainly not an opportunity for you to come and insult people.
I won't even get into what rhymes with Winslow, because that would be stooping to your level.

Ok, let's break your statement down:
First you said - "Macca comes on a few minutes after the song starts."
Response: Yes. Paul comes on after the song starts.
Then you stated - "I will provide a one-word commentary: WEED."
The way you have written this implies that Paul came on too late because he smoked too much weed. These are YOUR words NOT mine.
And Chris.......I read your follow-up post and it still sounds like you think it was asn "accident" tha Mc'Cartney started singing when he did,...

Are you sayihg that the only reason they played vibes at the end of the song is that they were "on drugs?" To me it looked like a couple of musicians who were just having fun together.
Over the past 40 years I have seen many musicians inmbibe all sorts of substances and still play in time and in tune. Basically, your post staed that Paul McCartney somoked too much pot and that's why he came out on stage n the middle of the song. I am simply disagreeing with your premise and have submitted a post.

I never interpreted these two sentences as being directly related. I only took the first to mean, 'watch this video and you'll see Macca come on after a few minutes'. It never dawned on me to interpret the second sentence as an "explanation" of the first, or as any kind of inference that he comes on after a few minutes because he was showing up late! Of course not. He came on exactly as planned, to sing his original part of the song and surprise the audience with his timely appearance. Michael, with all due respect, I think you were reading much more into Chris' original post than was ever intended.

Jim, thanks for helping to clarify the original post.
Well, the clip has resulted in hundreds of comments on youtube, most of which center around the greatness of this incredible collaboration. There are a few that say McCartney reminds them of their drunken uncle at a wedding, but for the most part people see this performance as magical. I am a devout fan of both musicians, but this performance to me is nothing more than two friends having a few and jamming out. The fact of who they are is overwhelming to the audience, but they are so loose up there that you can tell it's just a hoot.
There is, however, something a bit uncomfortable about Paul embracing Neil from behind.
Not sure about the red phone. It's been a prop for a while now at Neil's shows.

One thing nice about vibes and marimba is the total lack of personalization. Like grand pianos, they are standard instrument rental items in all major cities. You don't have to move yours all over the country - just contact S.I.R. or equivalent and they'll deliver an equally good instrument to your venue.
I was underwhelmed by the vibraphone player in this video, but no matter. Mallet instruments always look great on stage, IMHO.
