| I just got a G-100 head. I've been playing it through a 15" cab and it sounds pretty good. It's got very nice EQ. |

I have a G100III-112S. That was the final version of these great amps, black with colored knobs. The "S" stands for premium speaker, built like an EVM-12L, but with some JBL tone added.
I really like the clean channel, but the series III had a different voicing on the distortion channel which I'm not real fond of. Too much of a hard rock honk, and I prefer a bluesy smoothness.
But on the clean channel, and using the parametric EQ, it is possible to dial in a good sound on almost any guitar or steel. Absolutely love mine. And Yamaha gear is built tough. |

Yeah and I'm one of 'em. I think they're a great alternative to the Peavey 112 and actually occupy a sonic space somewhere between a Peavey 112 and a Fender Steel King. Unfortunately they have been discontinued for decades and although they can be had for a song,they sometimes require a good going through by yer local amp tech. |

I had one of these which I really liked for rock and roll. Stu Schulman turned me on to them. The clean sound is OK, but I liked the Carlton type smooth distortion you could get from these. One of the best solid state overdrive sounds I've heard. I used one of these in combination with a Session 400 when I was with Asleep at the Wheel.

I remember that amp,Wish that I still had it,They also made a version with a 15" speaker I blew mine up in France and Yamaha fixed it for free when I got home,great distorto sound.Dan howz the ankle? Stu

Stu, I remember you playing that amp and getting both that smooth Carlton thing and also the Albert King pop. THat's why I bought one. That amp is what I used for years for 'distortion', usually in combination with a Session 400.
I've got to say that it's an ugly amp. Kind of generic dark grey 'jazz' 1980s vibe. Looks like a Benson or Polytone. Would match nicely with a polyester leasure suit.
THe ankle is healing fine, fortunately it was the right ankle, so I can still play pedal steel. Andy Marshall at THD put in a volume control on my Desert Rose, so that I could play without the volume pedal. |

Oh yeah, I have 2 of them. The little G112 combo amps. As a matter of fact, one of mine is on the fritz and I am hoping to find the schematics for it. Anyone know a good amp tech in northern Arizona?
For a while back in the early 1980s just about every bass player I knew was using the Yamaha B100 bass head. I passed on one a few months ago because I am a little amp heavy these days and don't play bass.
I agree they have the best overdrive for a SS amp.
BTW Dan, you are right about it being a little on the ugly side. First thing I did was replace the brown grill cloth with Fender silver. I didn't figure it would hurt the value much.

I'm kinda surprised that anybody likes the distortion in these amps.
I put a Black Widow speaker in mine yesterday and my first impression is that it's a big improvement. Maybe I'll try it in the saloon tonight. |

My G100 is the Series III, and I don't care for the distortion channel either. Part of it is the EQ on that section, but also that the distorted sound doesn't carry in a club, so it has to be turned up too loud. I think the Series II that everyone is discussing had a better distortion; a lot of rockers liked it at the time they came out. |
