Topic: Connecting Amp Head To A Different Combo Speaker |

Let's say I have a combo amp and that I really like the speaker. Now, I also have an amp head and I'd like to connect it occasionally to the speaker in the combo amp.
What all is entailed to do that other than disconnecting the speaker from the combo chassis cable???
Can I just buy some sort of cable that will do it all for me??
OR, do I have to buy some wire/connectors/plugs and start soldering away??
Sorry, just want to see how this all plays out.

What I do is I hardwire the speaker in the combo cab to a 1/4" jack that I mount inside the cab. You can then run from the output jack of the combo amp to this speaker jack with a short speaker cable or you can run from the output of the head to the speaker with a longer cable. The jacks can be standard jacks. Just make sure that the wire is speaker wire as opposed to guitar cable.
If the combo amp is hardwred to the speaker as is sometimes the case then you need to detach the wires from the speaker and put a 1/4" plug on them to fit into the overall scheme.
There are other ways of dealing with it but this works for me.
Caution: do be aware that with tube amps you must turn them off or on standby before disconnecting the speakers. The amp must have a speaker load on it. |

| Stephen...Another important detail, be sure that the speaker value in the amp corresponds with the minimum speaker load called for by the amp head. For example, if your amp head calls for a minimum 8ohm load and the speaker rating is less, it is not advisable to use them as a unit. This information should be available on the amp head's data plate and the ohm rating of the speaker is normally found on the speaker magnet. |

One other thing to make sure you do. DO NOT HAVE ANY CONNECTION RUNNING TO THE OUTPUT OF THE COMBO AMP TO THE OUTPUT OF THE EXTERNAL AMP. Make sure like Jon said and isolate the speaker totally. No wires or connection left on the speaker going back to the combo power amp while connected to the other head.
You can damage the combo amps output.
