I'm new to the forum and to lap steel guitars - I bought a Morrell lap steel and am going to apply some art work to it - I have the body stripped will have the art work done sometime next week - I would like to know if all lap steels have something on the back side to keep them from sliding when they are played and if there is a preferred material other than felt - Any comments would be appreciated - Here's a link to see some of the art work I've done on acoustic guitars http://www.dbrooker.com/guitarart.html - Thanks for looking - Dennis Brooker

Cool!
I can't wait to see what you do to a Morrell.
For my lap steels without felt (or with), I keep square of material around cut from this thin, rubbery weave looking material that they sell to keep chairpads from slipping off of dining room chairs. don't know the proper name, but you can get this pads, like four to a pack at Target or K-Mart.
They fold up small enough to fit in your pocket or lap steel case.
You basically lay it on your pants leg, then place your steel, and no slip!
A lot of times I use an old wooden bar stool I have as a stand.I always put one of these chair pad cloths on it first to prevent slippage (really works!) and to protect the finish of the back of the guitar.
I see no reason to permanently attach anything to the back.

What you just described could be RUBBERMAID brand, kitchen shelving material. It looks woven but is a non-skid rubber based material. Come ins a small roll about 10-12 inches in width.

Have to use it on my Bakelites.

There is also a product that is sold by the roll that is used as a shelf liner for boats. It keeps the dishes and glasses from sliding around when underway. It sounds similar to what was described as above, woven material, sort of spungy feeling etc. Becuase it is sold by the roll, you could probably cover the entire bottom with it, like you would with felt. I used to buy the stuff at Boat US in VA but I'm sure it's available elsewhere.

I have seen felt on the backs of old laps.
on a lap I built I added the cover from an old book. a few screws holds it in place and kinda looks cool.
it has enough texture to keep the steel in my lap.

If there is a 99 cent store or a $1.00 store around you can get a roll there. Also works great for getting tough lids off pickle jars etc.

I might be a beginner now, but someday I'm gonna steel the show.

Dennis, cool artwork. Post a pic when it's done. To answer your question, no, not all lapsteel guitars have something on the back to keep them from sliding. I have (only) four lapsteels and none of them do. I prefer the ability to move them around in my lap as I play and find no need to add non-slip material. If I did I'd use a couple strips of that black non-skid stuff that they sell at the hardware.

While I don't use this material myself, the local nursing home has a sheet of material that might suit the bill. They just place a small square on the seat of a wheel chair and it keeps a person from sliding down or sliding out of the chair. A trip to the local nursing home might provide you with some great non-stick material with some great friction properties.

Taken out of context, that's a very cryptic/puzzling sentence, Steve!

What I meant to convey was that the material will not stick to the wheel chair or to ones clothing but it still provides the friction needed to hold a person in place. I hope this clears it up.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for all the input - For now I think I'll not put anything on the back of the lap steels I'm doing - that way the customer can do with them as they choose - Any one else feel free to add any comments as well - I have the art work done on first lap steel and will be posting photos in a day or two - DB

Hmmmmmmm ......I wonder if some fees and non-competition / non-disclosure agreements might be in order in this discussion ! ?
