I,m helping a friend, he's asking what string set up should he install as a 8 string E6. He's changing from a 6 string and would like to know should he add to the high end, low end, or split with one hgher and one lower string. And, what should he tune these two added strings. If someone could send me there set up ideas for this, He would be very thankful. Dennis.

I use a tuning on an 8 string lap that is oft called a C# minor 7th tuning. Basically an E6th tuning.
I tune mine like this:

1st: E
2nd: C#
3rd: B
4th: G#
5th: E
6th: C#
7th: B
8th: G#

I would think that tuning could be considered an E11th.

I know, it does have the A in there. Still, Don Helms apparently referred to it as E6 and so does Andy Volk's "Slide Rules."

You might also consider E13 like this: B~D~E~G#~B~C#~E~G#. That way you can also use the variation of E6/A-M7 with the same strings: A~C#~E~G#~B~C#~E~G#

I believe the tuning would need a 7b to be called an 11th tuning. For E11 that would be a D note.

Doug,
You might also need an F# to make it a 9th. Whoa!

I would put a G# on the top. It would be a pretty low key to play in for that harmony sound if you have the E as the high string.
