What would it take to make a lap steel sound more like a fiddle? I'm looking for something good enough to play the second part of a twin fiddle arrangement and have it sound more like two fiddles than like a fiddle and a steel.

The Bosstone can simulate a fiddle to a certain extent. Weldon Myrick and Hal Rugg used to use them together on the opry to make it sound like a fiddle section.

The original Bosstone is out of production (for years) but Hilton has a new model that is supposed to work like the old Bosstone.

Other than that, you would need a MIDI pickup and a MIDI Synth to get a fiddle sound.

Lynn, I would suggest that you use one of the units that have been mentioned above, tune a string down to unison with the next lower string and play both strings together. There should be a slight out of tune (minimal) between the two that creates beats. You can obtain a violin like sound if you experiment with this.

I found this video BossTone Demo II along with the vintage and modern versions of the Buzz Tone. There are also schematics and board layouts for DIYers:

Thanks for the help!

Excuse me, but anyone who really thinks that fuzz tone sounds even remotely like a fiddle or a string section must have their ears full of wax. Any record with that sound on it is a ruined record. IMHO.

Per - I don't see where he is asking how to sound like a string section. He just wants to sound "more like a fiddle". People have been doing that for years with various brands of fuzz boxes. Is it as good as having another fiddle? Of course not. But, if you don't have another fiddle player on the bandstand... Neutral

I guess if I wanted to sound really close to a fiddle I could use a Peterson Sonuus G2M and a Roland GR-33 synth. If the GR-33 can be controlled that way.

But I was thinking that the simulation didn't have to be that good to give the feel of twin fiddles instead of fiddle and steel.

But it does sound like a fiddle thru a fuzz tone (or an ophicleide) thru a fuzz tone.

I don't know anything about the Peterson but I have a Gr 33. The fiddle patch ain't so hot. And the manual says the Gk2a pick up won't work well with more than six strings.I have not tried it on my steel as of yet. If you already have a fiddle or fiddle track The Gr 33 fiddle patch might work for a 3rd or a 5th but I personally would not mix it very hot.Just my 2 cents !!
