| I was listening to an old song by The Judds (Mama He's Crazy) on the radio last night and wondering who the steel player was. I knew I had the LP here and I dug it out and saw it was Sonny Garrish. I remember seeing Sonny Garrish listed on an awful lot of recordings a few years back but I never hear much about him on the forum. Is Sonny still with us? Is he still paying steel? I really like what he was doing on the Judds song. |

As far as I know he's still with us.
If you want to hear a ton of Sonny,listen to pretty much any Red Stegall (sp?) cuz he's all up in it.

As good as it gets. One of the most worked session players. For some reason, mostly unheralded around here. I bet he's pouting all the way to the bank. 
Gene Watson, Lorrie Morgan, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, George Strait, etc, etc. Google him, check out his disco and some of you might be astonished at all the records he's played on. |

| Thanks for the replies. I know Sonny Garrish has been around because I began reading album credits to see who was playing steel many years before I started playing myself, and his was a name that kept coming up often enough to stick in my mind. We don't hear about Weldon Myrick too much these days either but he was another steeler that was listed on a lot of albums and I always enjoyed his stuff as well. I think Weldon has posted on here from time to time. Sonny Garrish is not a forum member. |

A lot of people don't realize that Sonny Garrish has been doin' REAL WELL playing sessions in Nashville for three decades now.

He did a really cool project in the late 70s with Fred Newell and a bunch of other guys -- that phase shifted sound that was so cool  back then. Some incredible instrumental stuff, some of it kinda rock-flavored in the style of the time.
Were you part of that project Mike? I can't find the record or recall what it was called. He did a bunch of instrumental stuff with the Po' Boys (sans Bill Anderson) as well.
I've never met him but I've always admired his playing and his success. Since he hasn't played steel shows, some steel players aren't familiar with his work.

One of my all time favorites and early influences. He definitely doesn't get the press time we give some others, but deserves it. It's amazing the number of songs I had to learn in the 70's and 80's that had Sonny playing on them.
The disc. list amazed me. |

That is one serious list of credits for sure. How do guys like this keep fresh and keep coming up with hooks on demand? Their talent makes me feel all puny.
About how old would Sonny Garrish be now? I can associate a face with the names of most of the greats but I've never seen a photo of Sonny Garrish. |

| I wish he would play at the ISGC sometime. I don't recall seeing him. Is he in the SGHF? I've appreciated his playing since first seeing him with Bill Anderson in the 70's. |

I think Sonny Garrish is indeed one of the greatest steel players of all times! His style and approach is absolutely amazing! You may not hear his name a lot, but you can bet you'll hear him playing on tons of recordings. Sonny is one of the busiest session players in Nashville, and when you hear him playing, it's easy to understand why.
A particular album that Sonny played on that was mentioned here earlier was a Red Stegall album called "Lone Star Beer" and Sonny indeed does shine on that one.
Regarding Weldon Myrick, I spent some time with both Weldon and Lloyd Green last week, and they are both doing great and keeping busy in the recording industry as well. |
