Buck,

I use soft tactical rifle cases and I am very happy with the results. They are inexpensive and well padded. The magazine pouches are good for bars and picks. There is a larger pocket for a cord and other goodies. The medium size will fit a single neck National, New Yorker, Chicagoan etc. Here is the link:

Ryan Rukavina turned me on to these folks.

If you search I recall reading a post with some good suggestions. I can't recall if it was here or the non pedal section.

good luck, Ron

Just wondering if that 8 string Fender in the above photo might be more accurately called a Stringmaster? I've been wondering this about mine- Brad's page calls a Deluxe the model with one covered slanted pickup.

Thanks.

At this price, with free shipping. I have ordered for a few steels to come and one for a buddy. $$23 bucks...think about it! Why trash My fender and good National cases when I can use one of these babies.

Andy, not to hijack the thread, but the Deluxe 8 was offered with a few different pickup configurations over the years it was made (1950 to 1981, according to Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars). This is one of the later models with the Stringmaster-style pickups.

Thanks for the pointer on the cases. I've ordered one for myself as well.

Yes, later model but still celebrating it's 53rd birthday this year! Under the tuner pan is penciled 10/56.

As Brad mentions, Deluxe 8 is the correct model name for this instrument. It has all of the Stringmaster features except one, multiple necks. Many people call these Stringmaster S8s, not technically correct but it describes the guitar well.

I thought the bag was a great deal with the free shipping until I clicked the paypal and the shipping cost was $49.65. I called them and they related that it was free shipping to the continental 48 states. Needless to say I cancelled the order, aren't we luck to live in Hawaii.

I have one more of these killer gig bags, $49 plus shipping. New, great construction fully padded, with extra padding around headstock area and edges, exterior pocket, etc. 34" by 12" interior measurements.

Martin Backpacker guitar gigbags will hold a singleneck easily. They also work as a pedalrack/legs/rods gigbag.

Buck,

You are very welcome. It has been a pleasure communicating with you. I want to give credit where credit is due however. I was turned on the these cases by Ryan Rukavina when I purchased a custom steel from him about a year ago. This is Ryans find not mine. He is the man.

Best,

Rich

The tactical gun case mentioned fits a 1948 Gretsch/Valco lap steel pretty much perfectly. It's very easy to carry around and is a good quality (made in Vietnam).
