I bet a lot of use listened to them when we were kids. I still do enjoy hearing them and remember the many Ventures records.
Bogle and Wilson started the group and traveled as a duo for a while just picking up bass and drums and then added a permanent guitar player (Nokie Edwards) and later they added a permanent drummer.

Did a gig with them in the early 80's, I think.
A few weeks before Lowell George passed on.
Nice guys, really had their act down cold,
and so could afford to leave the egos back home
and just relax and play cause they loved to play.

The first time I heard "Walk,Don't Run",I thought it was a pedal steel.Found out differently pretty quick,but the idea stuck.Went on to play a lot of their stuff,and got some good six string instruction from all the vinyl they did.Bob has a lot of friends he never met,who join the Ventures family(and his own)in feeling his loss.  |

I did not know any of the names except Nokie. Walk, Don't Run was one of the first rock tunes I tried to play on the guitar. Still do it every chance I get. Played it last Fri. nite. I like to play their tunes. Great music from the Ventures et al from that era.

Back in the day, I learned a lot of guitar by studying the Ventures records for hours on end. They were certainly trail blazers.

What can I say, too?
They really influenced me.
Of course "Walk-Don't Run", and then back to back (I'm pretty sure), the beautiful latin, "Perfidia".
All my musical buddy's at the time said that the Ventures all play Fender amps and guitars, and that song "Walk-Don't Run" - that guitar player gets that sound, cuz he's using the 'whacky-bar'.
I just loved that discription. I'm sure my buddy's weren't the ones who came up with the term, but it sure stuck with me.

Web browsing brings up both.
Personally, I like VENTURES.

Mosrite guitars back in the day.

| Back in the 60's I played a Ventures model Mosrite Bass. The Ventures were probably very influential to many guitar players. When I was playing lead guitar I "tried" to play Walk Don't Run. |

All I did was type in "Ventures" on Google (general search), and there were listings for "Venturers; as well as "Ventures".
That's odd, I went and double-checked Google, and now I can't seem to find "Venturers". I swear I saw it on the web, somewhere.
No biggie.

Oh no Chip, I was questioning your findings, I only thought that perhaps it was something that I just wasn't aware of. I don't doubt you for a second.
I'm no Ventures expert by any means and didn't mean to imply otherwise. There must be tons of stuff that I don't know about them.
I've seen many times something entered in a search box and be gone the next time you look. Cheers  |

No problem at all. I did visit some sites when I re-checked, and Wikepedia seems to have a fairly true and in-depth discography of the Ventures.
I really eat up being able now to check-out all bands, singers, musicians etc. that influenced me - all at your fingertips, thanks to the internet.
It's a gas.
If it weren't for the Ventures and many, many others, we all would probably be doing something else; instead of sharing a wonderful legacy.

The Ventures were very influential to me when I started playing guitar and bought my '58 Strat because of them.
I did several of there songs like "Walk Don't Run" on a TV talent show in Boston with my band.
I now do it on steel and would like to try it at one of our FSGC jams some day.

Yes, it was Community Auditions with Gene Jones as host in January,1961 before Dave Maynard took over the show.
Our Band name was the Galaxies.
We came in 2nd and was beaten out by a dance group.
Funny thing is that Dave Maynard lives two blocks away from me here now in Florida.
I did several of his Record Hops years ago when he was the WBZ Radio DJ back then.
Good memory guys.
No, but I worked down the street from Boch in Norwood.

Well I remember Dave Maynard.
I was 5 when they changed host....
The only Gene Jone's I know is from THIS forum; LOL.
The Galaxies does ring a bell, I was JUST becoming aware of the Boston scene at that age,
since dad recorded many acts even then, in our house
or about the area.
My strongest early memory was 'The Lost', and then 'The Standels'.
But for national acts The Ventures were certainly
right up at the top as an earliest memory.
