That was wonderful. What tuning do you suppose was on that front neck. |

Hi Andy,
Thanks for posting that on Don! I never heard that before.
Don played our 2nd Annual Steel Show here at Marshfield, MO two years ago and I was thinking about that a lot last Saturday when we had our 4th Annual Show. He played this same steel 1949 Gibson Console. I carried it inside to the stage for him and it was a very heavy steel guitar. He used the E6th and B11th tunings on his steel. Also, he used a Stevens brand Dobro bar with the finger groove in it.
He was a great innovator of steel in its formative years and a good friend to me.
Thanks and GOD bless!

I have always listened to the sound of Don Helms with Hank since I was a Kid
To meet him at a party in Nashville was something else ......but the iceing on the cake was for Don to ask could he hold on to my arm whilst we negotiated several steps outside the house down to where the cars were.....I met him a few times after that.....what a nice man.....and I also have his book ...signed to me

Don Helms was our special guest at our 2007 Annual Marshfield steel guitar show.
We still have a few DVDs available of that show and all sales go to only promote our annual steel guitar show. The DVD with Don Helms is one of the best we have. He backed several singers and played solos and talked about his years with Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, The Wilburn Brothers and Loretta Lynn.
This DVD is just fabulous and real history of the steel. You may order if interested from me by check or money order for only $20 and that covers the postage inside the USA.

Great post! Best I've seen so far of Mr. Helms. Found some other great clips that show up along with the Don Helms clip. Some of Faron Young with some hot player on a Bigsby. Don't know who it is. _________________ www.deluxe34.com lap steel stands, Clinesmith, Gibson Console Grande, Northwesterns, The Best Westerns

Yeah, I think the Faron Young gig was one of Lloyds first jobs upon arriving in Nashville. Maybe another forumite is more certain, but i'm pretty sure it was his first live gig.
The Bigsby was also owned by Faron. I heard that he told Lloyd his stringmaster was a piece of crap, and he had to play the Bigsby. Funny stuff....hey, I certainly wouldn't mind making that upgrade. |
