| James and Michael, I remember when these solid staters first came out. I got a salesman to bring a whole band's rig to a gig at a motorcycle bar we were playin' at. These things had so many "watchdog" circuits in them that they were constantly turning themselves off! I couldn't get through "Devil in a Blue Dress" without problems. The bikers weren't happy! Salesman was very embarrassed, and stopped carrying the line! |

Ah, the good ol' days. We had one of those four channel Standel P.A.s. We could arrive at 8:45 for a 9:00 gig and be set up on time.

Well, I can tell you where TWO of them went
These have been my main amps for more than 10 years.
Custom 15's -- I was shocked at the $610 sticker price -- mine are both 1970 models.
Interesting to see the Spoonful endorsement because in 1967 my band (The Nashville Shadows) did a summer tour with the Spoonful and Zal Yanovsky let me use his Custom 48 (4x12s) for the shows.
Even more interesting that, in addition to the Spoonful, we also played shows with The Rascals and saw Nitty Gritty several times in that time period.
Since I started playing steel in the mid 70s I searched for the right solid state sound. Tubes are just too heavy and fuzzy for my ears -- a great solid state amp is a beauty to behold and Bob Crooks had the magic. I like his SS amps MUCH better than his multi-thousand dollar tube amps. I know I'm in the minority but feel truly fortunate to have two of the best sounding steel amps I've ever played through.
It took me 20 years to 'rediscover' Standel but I'm glad I did.

I never played through a Standel amp but Carl's Music in Dartmouth , Mass, closed many years ago, carried the line and I recall these amps with the teal blue grill cloth and the silver domed Lansing speakers. Very pretty...  |

Standels are great. Solidstate ones sound amazing!!!

| I had one of those big Standels when I was in high school. It had a head that was just the pre-amp. The power amp was mounted to the back of the speaker cabinet. It was huge and loud. I don't know that I would want to carry it around these days. Now I have a custom 15, and an artist 15. They sound pretty cool, but I don't ever leave the house with them. I have thought about selling one or the other of them, but they are just too cool. My Artist is like the one in the catalog picture with the amp on the metal rack mounted in between 2 speaker cabinets. What a rig that would be to have to haul around. I never knew that they were so expensive when they were new. |

I traded a blackface Super in on a solid state 4-10 Standel Artist aroumd 1969. I traded the Artist for an SG with 2x12 Altec Lansings around 1974. The Artist was a good amp and the SG was a great amp - a hybrid with a ss preamp and tube driver. I had to quit using the SG because I was injured in a car accident and couldn't carry it, but I loved the sound. The SG is still in my garage.
I have worked with a couple of very good steel players who loved Standel.
And before you ask: Yes, I profoundly wish I still had the Super.

| in the 70's custom 24's were popular with the hot guitarists and some steel players. i had one...traded a sho-bud xmas tree for it...it was better. finally broke the cabinet and made a new one and replaced the altec 12's (killers) with a bw15. great amp that wouldn't die, amazingly enough...cuz no one could have fixed it if it did, with those plastic encased modular doohickies. |
