Just spent an incredible day participating in a master class with Jimmy Bruno, with whom I've been studying for the past several months. Wow. What an amazing player and musician. I'm still reeling from the experience. Here's a photo from my cellphone:

Jimmy Bruno has two excellent instructional DVD's: "No Nonsense Jazz Guitar and "Inside 'Outside' Jazz Guitar." He also offers online instruction for a subscription fee. Bruno's "street player" method is very easy to adapt to the steel guitar fretboard. Instead of teaching a lot of scales, he sticks to the Dorian mode and adds one non-scale tone at a time to get altered sounds. He will also move the Dorian mode up a half step or down a half step or up 3 steps to get altered tones. (Please note: I have oversimplified my description of Bruno's jazz instruction method) |

Jim,
As Russ has said,...you lucky dawg! Jimmy is, hands down, my favorite jazz guitarist. Everything he plays sounds melodically, and structurally so natural and so pleasing to the ear. I envy your good fortune of studying with Jimmy.
One question: Were you studying with standard or pedal steel guitar?
I have most of the available Bruno CD's. At the top of my list is his 2007 release Maplewood Avenue. Here's a link to Amazon.com. (no song samples)
http://www.amazon.com/Maplewood-Avenue-Jimmy-Bruno/dp/B000VDDG84/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1245067441&sr=1-1
And to a YouTube of a performance of the title song:

Once again, congrats on your good fortune to have studied, in person with this great player.
Keep on pickin'!

I started out studying with him on pedal steel but quickly realized that I could get the concepts into my head more quickly and easily if I used the same instrument that he's using, so I switched over to guitar. Once I have the ideas incorporated into my internal jazz concept, then I can work out how to play them on steel. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying the 'bonus' of learning some jazz guitar. Some of it is starting to 'leak out' into my steel playing. We'll see how that goes. But, yes, I am fortunate in being able to study with him.
Now comes the big secret! YOU CAN TOO! Go to www.jimmybrunoguitarinstitute.com and check this out. It is amazing and is the perfect way to learn, as far as I'm concerned. For a measly $20/month, I have unlimited access to Jimmy and can upload a video of myself playing any of the exercises or songs. Within about 2-3 days, Jimmy posts a video response to mine, coaching me personally on how to do things differently, or what to work on next. A few weeks later, we repeat the process. It's completely personalized instruction over the web. I don't need an hour's lesson with Jimmy; I need "the right 5 minutes from him" exactly when I'm ready for it and not too soon. I can't recommend his method enough. If you want to get inside Jimmy's approach to playing, this is the place to make it happen. I'm already playing stuff on guitar that I can't play on steel (and I haven't touched a regular guitar in over 20 years!) _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Yeah, Jim! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!
Here's one you might have already seen in your studies, but I've added it for the benefit of other forum members. Bruno as the "professor":

BTW: Jim, I have to say, from all that I've heard of your playing, you've already earned my admiration. I can only imagine how impressive your pickin' will be by adding some of Bruno's concepts.
Keep on pickin'!
