Hey BC...here's an old thread about the Hadacol Boogie.
Walter Stettner had a clip of that tune so he may know who played steel on the Nettles records.

Charlie:

I think both Professor Longhair and Bill Nettles recorded both songs, but as far as I know Bill wrote both of them. Hadacol Boogie was recorded by several other people, so it's hard to say which one you may be referring to.

Here are the Nettles versions:

Hadacol Bounce

Hadacol Boogie

I got curious myself about the steel player on Hadacol Bounce. Just listening, I thought maybe I heard an echo or two of Jerry Byrd, but it sounds a bit crude for Jerry-—maybe intentionally? Jerry was around the Mercury studios in 1949.

I then went to this link, which has a lot of Bill Nettles memorabilia:

Notice the newpaper clipping of Jerry Byrd. I don’t know what that means, but why would this clipping be on a web page devoted to Nettles?

He had steel at times in his band on personal appearances. Below are a couple of examples, but you can’t ID the players. The first is from 1946; the second is probably from the 50s. You can’t see the steel player in the second pic because Bill’s daughter is in the way.

Charlie, where can I get a clock like this:

I have a compilation of Bill Nettles. The liner notes includes some information but unfortunately nothing about the steel player. Listed are Danny Dedman (or Dedmon) on Lead Guitar and Vocals, Robert Shivers on Fiddle and Pal Thibodeaux on Piano.

Kind Regards, Walter

I agree, it does sound too rough for something Jerry did. According to the release notes, it was Prentice Takewell who played steel on Nettles' first release. Maybe he did the Hadacol Boogie too?

Donny:

That web site with Nettles info I referred to above mentioned Takewell, but in reference to recordings Bill made near the end of his life--mid 1960s.

What release notes are you referring to? I assume Walter is referring to a CD on the Jasmine label. There are only a very few Nettles CDs out there.

Nettles career goes back to the early 40s, maybe even the 30s. I supposed it's possible the guy on his first recording was also around 25 or 30 years later, but that would be unusual.
