Yea! One of my early influences as well. Those first two Pure Prairie League albums were killer. Good stuff. I saw him on a recent PPL tour with Craig Fuller. It was fun. Some great tunes.

That whole musical era was a huge reason I took up pedal steel.

I loved the songs PPL did and the color that John's pedal steel playing gave to them.

From the ballady Just Can't Believe It to the more uptempo stuff like KC Southern and the novelty of I'll Fix Your Flat Tire, I was blown away by John David Call's steel playing. Great playing and tone. Glad to hear he's still at it. Hope I get to hear him again sometime.

I dig out the Two Lane LP every so often just to clean the cobwebs out of the speakers.

Major MAJOR Hero.

The first PPL LP (damn hard to find on CD; expensive when ya do) with the REAL Norman Rockwell illustration--not the "Bustin Out" (w/"Amie") disappointment, their second--remains one of my Top 5.

Sa-LUTE!

One of the best steel solos I've ever heard.

Exactly what Jerry O. said. John Call was a major influence. It's gratifying to learn that he's still playing and doing ok.

Actually, David wasn't on the second album. That was Al Brisco on steel.

Yes Jim. I have that one too. Nice steel work on this one both ballad and uptempo.

And, Oh Yeah....I enjoyed his banjo and dobro work as well as the background vocals on these lps just as much. Well rounded musician.

You're right Jay, I forgot. Still, those first two records are my favorites. Al did some fine work on the second record.
Craig, "Tears" is on the first record and John is listed as the steel player. Great tune.

I've been playing for over 20 years and I'm still trying to figure out the triplets John played at the end of the steel solo on "Dance" from the "Live Takin' the Stage" album. I've got the notes, just not the speed with the clean blocking. Still one of my favorites...

Dittos to above comments. A huge influence on me, along with Rusty Young. I wore out all those PPL LP's trying to copy his stuff. I consider him among the top of country rock steelers of the 1970's.

I always wondered what happened to him.. his playing on their live album is flawless, especially his fast staccato stuff. All of it great. Is he still playing a Sho~Bud through a Twin? Definitely one of the players that got me into it.

These are the guys that pulled me into playing pedal steel. I would see some of the great players like Buddy Charleton, Buddy Emmons, Dickie Harris, and think they were cool and great but it didn't have the attraction that hearing these other guys had. Looking back on it I'm sure the gig had much more to do with it than the talent or ability.

Jeff Redefer was a part of PPL and played guitar a little for them. We have been in touch over the past few months over some photo's I have of PPL. He live's 15 miutes from John David. We will be working together to try to get John David to start doing some Steel shows. Keep your fingers crossed.

Dave! Thanks sooo much for your post about JDC! I've tried to locate him myself, a BIG DEFINITE on his influence in developing my style on the steel guitar! I'm also glad to hear that he is still playing, I always went to see PPL whenever they were scheduled anywhere close. The last concert that I attended was at Six Flags and John Call nor Larry Gashorn were with them, I enjoyed the replacement, Vince Gill, but was saddened to see John gone.
Yes, to you Bill,
