Help...

I have a 15" Altec speaker that I may sell but have no idea how to price it. It is a 418, 8ohm with a white frame and grey bell type magnet cover. It has the original cone. Ballpark pricing? Thanks

$100-$150, if it's real clean.

If it's a 418 A or B the old specs said up to 100 watts program material, probably around 65 watts RMS.

If it's a 418-8H or C, old specs said 150 watts program, probably around 100 watts RMS.

Using a current high temperature Voice coil could get these up to 160-200 watts RMS. The older ones handled the same power, or perhaps a bit more than the contemporary JBLs. The ALTEC speakers have a generally lighter, and therefore faster moving mass than other speakers, these things, with properly charged magnets, are quick. Jim

How do I tell the type? There is a stamped mark on the frame that looks like 1-A on the top and G-something on the bottom inside a split box.

On the back of the magnet cover, there ought to be a rectangular metalic label with the model # on it.

Is yours one with the older 15" frame or the later 16 inch model?

Here's a 1971 catalog sheet.

Here's 1975 and 1978 catalog sheets of later ALTEC MI speakers, including the 418. You will notice the later frames. The 12" is more rigid than earlier, the 15" has the wider outer 16" flange, however, the cone size is still the same as earlier 15" speakers.
