Decent sounding/playing 8-stringer sought for teaching needs. Somewhere in the $300-$400 range. Old or new isn't an issue, as long as it sounds good and plays OK. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

Thanks for the tip, Jozef, I did check in, he didn't have anything in my price range. But I've got several other leads right here on the forum. You got an 8-stringer you want to turn loose of? Once I get one, let's get together and you can show me the ropes, I'm such a newbie on lap! _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

Good suggestion, Doug. Trouble is: my incoming student has one, and either it needs a proper restringing, or something, but it has very thin, anemic tone. Compared to my 6-string Academy (Ricky student lap), it's a dog. Woof.
Have you played them, Doug, and you thought they were OK? Maybe their Roy Wiggins model sounds OK? Anyone know?
How do the Gold Tones sound? I'm not thrilled with their vol/tone knobs split apart. I'm also looking at Bluestem laps, Harry Sheppards new ones, and any other options that present themselves. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

Yes, the Morrell is a cheap, entry level 8-string lap steel, but it's within the price range you mentioned. It's not really fair to compare a Morrell to a vintage Rick or most other vintage guitars or other 8-strings. In other words... you get what you pay for. I doubt that you'll find a quality 8-string lap steel for less than $400. I use a $89 Rogue for teaching 6-string lap steel. It's easy because I can leave it in the teaching studio all the time. For recording or occasional non-pedal gigs I use my Stringmaster, Alkire eHarp, or one of my other vintage steels. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Good points...I know me, and despite my desire to keep the entry cost down, I also know that if the guitar sounds lousy I won't want to play or practice as much; so then my target expenditure range creeps up a bit. I'm sure you can relate!
But cheap studio laps, better gigging laps is a wise idea, thanks, Doug!

John,
I would suggest that you give those that Dwight has a good look. I have and they look very good. Sound? I have no idea. Worth looking I think.
Hope you find the just right guitar and play it all the time.
God bless you and yours,
Ronald Smith |

Dwight, it would sure help if you could post some audio samples, I'm reluctant to buy something without some idea what it sounds like, I'm extremely finicky about tone. If that's a problem, I understand. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

John, I don't have a single 8 string steel. I am looking for one myself. Jim told me today that he sold an 8 string B-8 Rick for $450 last week.
I missed that one. Hope you will find one you like. |
