I heard this cut the other day and was curious who played the steel solos on here. Sounds to me like the first solo is on the E9 neck and the second on C6. Holy pick blocking Batman! _________________ https://www.facebook.com/ggefell/ |

Hello!
According to Amazon.com the Steel player is Jim Murphy
Quote: |
Volkaert is comfortable with any number of country and blues styles, coaxing the sweetest sounds from his ’53 Telecaster. Volkaert’s nimble leads are handily matched by Jim Murphy’s steel guitar, with the two meshing neatly in tone and style. |

Yes for sure Jim Murphy, Breakneck is on the RV Telewacker CD, it's a great CD and Jim( RIP) plays his butt off. Wide open I would say.
Jim was a great player, he passed from cancer I believe early last year.
thanks

That Telewacker CD contains a lot of the best steel playing AND guitar playing you'll ever hear! Every cut is a knockout. If you don't have a copy, I highly recommend getting hold of one ASAP. You won't regret it. |

Sometime around '93 or so My band opened up a show for Clinton Gregory. I assumed he would have a typical young rocker Nashville road band. Not so. Redd was on guitar and Big Jim playing steel. It was a blast. Plus we were in a club where after their show we played dance music for the rest of the night and Jim Murphy sat in with us for a few tunes. Really a blast. |

While you're in Amazon, grab this DVD!
A Tele lesson by Redd plus over two hours of Redd, Cindy Cashdollar, Chris Gilson, and Nate Rowe, live at the Continental Club in Austin all on one DVD!
Redd and Cindy at their very best! Among the many other tunes on it are the aforementioned Telewacker, and Tubin.
If you don't have this DVD, you are missing out, Big Time!

I'm going to have to check out that DVD for sure. I've only ever seen a few You tube clips, and heard the Breakneck cut from a guitar compilation CD I have. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/ggefell/ |

Wow! I just bought the video, I even had 17c to spare left over in Paypal... I've been into Martin Taylor lately, but you just can't beat American guitarists for some things - even when people like Volkaert, Gatton, Scotty Anderson play "straight" jazz, they still have that wirey barefoot/moonshine/stock car/marry-yer-cousin redneck edge, you know? Yee-haw. |

I sure miss ol' Murf
He was bar none, to me, the best steel player I've ever heard
or was lucky enough to stand beside and play a little rhythm for.
I spent many happy hours trying to steal licks/chords/ideas from that great man, and he was even a better person.
Though he left us with some nice recordings on various peoples albums & cds, he is sorely missed, and I'm a lucky *******, to say I knew the man,

I believe that Redd is from another nation, up near the North Pole somewhere, where people live in igloos and sit by seal holes waiting for dinner to arrive. |

Greg,
Not to veer off your original thread or anything, but yes, that DVD is the real deal! The cost of it is worth it for the "Pork Chops" alone! But the live at the Continental part is awesome!
Two masters of their instruments wonderfully complementing each others playing! Great band!

According to the Teletwang DVD, Redd is from one of the westernmost provinces of Canada, I forget wich. _________________ John Drury

I received the aforementioned CD yesterday, and WOW!!!! ..incredible, to say the least. I had the honor and extreme priviledge to play in a band that opened twice for Johnny Paycheck when Murph was in the road band. He was quite friendly and answered my many questions. Just to stand offstage and watch him those nights are memories that remain with me to this day. I am curious if he plays on any other of Redd's CDs. |
