If you had a time machine and could go back and see ONLY 4 gigs, steel guitar related, what would they be? It's a tough question. I was thinking about it last night and posted it on my facebook account, then woke up this morning with a couple different choices. But, here's what I'm sticking with
1. Any Spade Cooley gig at the Santa Monica Pier with Joaquin on steel.
2. Jimmy Rivers and Vance Terry at the 23 Club
3. Although, not a "gig" sitting in the recording studio in S.F. while the TX Playboys recorded the Tiffany Transcriptions.
4. Any Dick Mcintire gig.
there are so many more... |

I don't have to go back too far... how about Bill Frisell with Greg Leisz Continental Club Austin Texas at SXSW 2009. Greg of course plays pedal steel but also played steel during the show. That was a phenomenal life altering event! Thanks for suggesting it Mr. Kevin Brown (who joined me there in the front row).
Way back... The Sam Ku West sessions 1928.

It's difficult to narrow down, but I'd choose a front row seat at these events for sure:
-Alfred Apaka and The Hawaiian Village Serenaders in their hey day (Jules Ah See was the steel player).
-A live Hawaii Calls...with Barney Isaacs...
-Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys from the 60's, with Gene Crownover on the steel.
-Jerry Byrd...the Nashville "Two Guitars" sessions with Chet, or the later years when he was in Hawaii. |

Tony, I'm riding right with you on the Joaquin Murphey and Vance Terry gigs.
#3-- Jules Ah See...anywhere...did he ever play straight steel guitar and pedal steel on the same occasion? That would have been something to see.
#4-- Tom Morrell & The Time-Warp Tophands...the first day of the "Pterodactyl Tales Pt. 4" sessions, when Clint Strong broke out the Les Paul and away they went.

Spade Cooley at the Riverside Rancho in Glendale, Ca.
with Joaquin on Steel. When Spade left the Rancho for Santa Monica, Joaquin stayed at the Rancho and Tex Williams took over the band. Spade hired a new band for Santa Monica with Noel Boggs playing steel.
The Royal Hawaiian Hotel when Eddie Bush was playing steel with Harry Owens prior to WW2.
Would like to have been at the Oakland Civic Auditorium during WW2 when Bob Wills set an attendance record of over 20,000 people.
Would like to re-live seeing the Pee Wee King band at the Riverside Rancho around 1950. Every song was highly arranged. Roy Ayers was playing Steel. |

Sol Hoopii - any gig during his Tricone heydays
Herb Remington - mid-late 40's w/ the Texas Playboys (feat. Junior Bernard!!!)
Speedy West - with Jimmy Bryant (maybe something with Tennessee Ernie Ford)
Greg Leiz - with Bill Frisell

| Mr. Tonnesen, I stand corrected. Boggs playing is all over those transcriptions from the Santa Monica Pier Ballroom. For some reason I thought that Joaquin had done those gigs as well. Thanks for filling me in on that. So...I'm changing my first choice to Tex Williams at the Riverside Rancho with Joaquin on steel, even though I would've loved to have seen Boggs play as well. That's the tough thing about this question is that I can think of so many more steelers that I wish I could've seen. But I'm sticking to my 4 picks. |

My selection are listed in the order of preference:
Number 1. Jules Ah See with Alfred Apaka and The Hawaiian Village Serenaders at the Tapa Room, Hawaiian Village.
I consider Jules as the greatest Hawaiian steel guitar player. 
Number 2. David Keli'i in a live Hawaii Calls program at the Moana Banyan Court. David is my second choice for greatest player.
Number 3. Barney Isaacs with Hilo Hattie and the Hawaiian Village Serenaders at the Tapa Room Hawaiian Village. This show was a regular for me and was the best show for many years. I took many guests to this show and they all loved it.
Number 4. Sol Ho'opii on electric steel in some venue. Probably my backyard. I would have liked to hear his personal story from Hollywood to his Christian ministry.
