Topic: What is your favorite steel break? |

This question only has right answers,as a child growing up in the early 60s(i could hear Patsy Cline before i made my grand apperance through momma's belly).I remember my listening to a steel break i am guessing in the mid 60's on Buckaroo by Tom Brumley.LLoyd Green with Charlie Pride on Kaw Lidja and Bruce Bouton with Ricky Scaggs on highway 40 blues also makes my ears melt.Every response to this post is going to be positive so lets hear about some more great breaks that i did not mention!

That's a tough one to answer for me because I've heard so many amazing steel breaks and it's hard to pick just one favorite, because I love 'em all. There are so many great players who play these great steel breaks, so it's hard to tell.One of my favorite steel breaks is the one that Paul Franklin played on Vince Gill's "When I Call Your Name" and another one he did on Vince's song "Never Knew Lonely". John Hughey's steel break on "Look At Us" also comes to mind. Another amazing steel break is on "One Night At A Time" by George Strait-Paul Franklin played it in the studio while Mike Daily played it when George played the song live. There's a great steel break by Mike Johnson on a song called "Tonight Cowboy You're Mine" by new country duo Joey and Rory. I also love all the steel breaks Don Helms played on Hank Williams' songs, and Tim Sergent's steel solo on Dierks Bentley's version of "House of Gold", which is featured on the Gospel Favorites from the Grand Ole Opry, to name a few.

Mine has to be, John Hughey's steel break on "Look At Us, it's awsome,when I heard it for the first time I had to keep playing it over, it had to be the steel break of the year. Slim. |

Derrick-You nailed it right on. "Look at us".
One that also sticks out that took a pop song
and gave it a nice touch was "It's so nice to be
with you" which I think was an early Mr. Franklin.

| I have always enjoyed Weldon Myricks playing on the Johnny Bush version of "Whiskey River". There are so many good ones listed here and some we have not thought of. Buddy Emmons, Hal Rugg, John Hughey, Lloyd Green, Paul Franklin and many others have left us wanting more. |

One of the best in recent years has to be Mike Johnson playing on Daryl Singletary's version of "I never go around mirrors". Spine tingling! Thanks Mike!

Today my two favorites are
Lloyd Green on "Walking piece of heaven" By the Calhoun Twins
John Hughey on "If I could only fly" By Joe Nichols, The list of favorites for me is very long I have many more, I have just been listening to the great Tom Morrell he is so unbelievable on non pedal, sometimes you would think he was using pedals I just listened to an instrumental version of "Half A Man" And Tom is so smooth and very creative, I wish I knew how to post a song and I'd let you listen. |

The great Buddy Emmons on the George Strait hit Adalida. Paul Franklin would not even attempt it on the awards show the other night. What kind of mind does it take to come up with turns like that ?

This question come up every six month or so.
Doesn't anyone have the nerve to say "Teach your Children" by Jerry Garcia.
Ok- He isn't the greatest player-but WOW. What he did for bringing the instrument to the publics attention.
and you know what.....Just listen to it. What a sound! What a piece of history.
