I never picked up a copy of Buddy Emmons sings Bob Wills until recently - It just sounded like one of those projects where the sideman steps up just for fun, and often the quality isn't quite there.
Anyway, I was wrong - it's a great record with great performances all around. Production is a little slicker than I normally like, but it's not obtrusive. If you thought the same as I did, you owe it to yourself to give it a chance. |

John, I've been enjoying Buddy Emmons Sings Bob Wills since it's 1976 release on vinyl. I've also added the CD version to my collection.
I don't know if I'd call it a 'slick' production. To my ears, it's more like a high quality studio recording. There's no "Specter-ish", wall o' sound glizt on it. Just pro playing, recording, and mastering. One of my faves!
Oh and one other thing: What a set of 'pipes' Mr. Emmons has!
Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

One of my all time top ten favorite albums! Johnny Gimble's arrangements are all over this thing. Great steel guitar but not really a steel guitar album, but great music and production. You can hear sound samples of the album here:

I agree. This is a GREAT album. It just reeks of FUN. Sounds like Buddy is grinning through all of his singing. I like it much more than all of the Swing Shift series of recordings he did with Ray Pennington, which, for my taste, are too tightly scripted. This one is just one swingin' heckuva good time. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Some of you might be interested in BE's motivation for the album. The following is from an exchange I had with him in the early days of the forum. I couldn't find the thread in the closed postings but I did print them out at the time so I scanned them. I include the first 3 for newer members who may not be familiar with the Swing Shift series. The fourth one has his explanation re BESBW album

For everyone that likes Buddy Emmons Sings Bob Wills I have a recommendation for another, equally good album, Bobby Hicks Texas Crapshooter. The vinyl album was released in 1978 on County Records (County 772). However, it is now (thank goodness) available on CD:
http://www.amazon.com/Texas-Crapshooter-Bobby-Hicks/dp/B0000012EH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1244422991&sr=1-1
And On iTunes.
The album has 12 instrumental tracks. The first 6 are Western Swing, much like BESBW. The second 6 are bluegrass. As you may well know, Bobby Hicks is a master fiddle player of both genres.
The western swing songs feature (beside Bobby playing all fiddles): Buddy Emmons - steel (of course), Buck White - piano, Bucky Barrett - lead guitar, Bruce Nemerov - rhythm guitar, Joe Allen - bass, and Karl Himmel - drums. The first six songs are "Panhandle Rag", "Goodbye Liza Jane", "Maiden's Prayer", "Cherokee Swing", "Texas Crapshooter", and "Big Beaver". The Big E is afforded ample room to solo on all cuts.
The Bluegrass songs feature Bobby, again playing all fiddles accept track 12 which also has Vassar Clements, Sam Bush - mandolin, Al Munde - b**njo, Roland White - guitar, and Roy Husky, Jr. - bass. The last six sings are "Snowflake Breakdown", "Scotland", "Big Mon", "East Tennessee Blues", "Cheyenne", and "Paddy on the Turnpike".
Like BESBW, I've enjoyed this album since it's initial release and immediately purchased the digital version upon it's availability.
Check out the sound samples at either Amazon.com or iTunes.
Keep on pickin'!

Another great cut off of an early Ricky Skaggs album with Albert Lee and Buddy in case anyone missed my earlier post on it:
