It is a poorly kept secret that many good PSG players are into jazz. Given the versitility of the instrument that is no surprise - chord possibilities, no frets (1/4 tones) etc etc. _________________ Ellis Miller

I grew up in the 40's,back then you had two choises on the radio,Country music[they called it hillbilly back then] or big band and jazz,I learned to LOVE both.It may seem strange but my first two musical heros[still so today] was Hank Snow and Bird Parker.I love the old steel classics by Jimmy Day,Remington, etc, And just as much the great steelers such as Curly,Herby,Doug, playing pop and jazz,One of my favorite CD's is Mr. Cohen's [Four to the Bar],He has three tunes on it I love,Tenor Madness by Sonny Rollins,Yardbird Suite and Au Privave by the GREAT Bird,Also would like to mention the great stuff Mike Perolin does. Mr. Davidson's post prompted me to recall a steel player that I worked with from time to time in my teens and early 20's. He played a lot of big band tunes from the likes of Glenn Miller, Ellington, Basie and others. Because of this learning experience, I had a major head start on other players my age. _________________ Ellis Miller

One thing you have to watch, on the Cannonball site all the horn solos are transposed down a step and a half to alto keys. That part's O.K . - normal - but his software also (sometimes) transposed the chord changes too. "Straight No Chaser" in D, right..... And, sometimes not. |
