Played the Valley Ala [VALLEY DAYS] yesterday, this is a big event that brings in around eight thousand each year.We went on about 6pm,Had a huge covered stage, halfway in our second tune, all heck broke lose, the cover on the stage did'nt help, torrents of heavy rain and wind was blowing ACROSS the stage, had to quit in a HURRY. The only good thing we got paid, most I ever made for playing one and a half songs. One more reason to HATE,HATE,HATE, outdoor gigs.I have played a lot of outdoor gigs, some are nice, but sometimes you are sweating like a chicken with his head on a chop block,OR freezing your butt off. In my toolbox-of-stuff I carry a couple of disposable painter's dropcloths. They're still folded neatly in their bags, but they're easy to get to in an emergency like that. Thank goodness I've never had to use them.

I carry a 12ft./12ft. plastic tarp to all outdoor gigs. Had to use it only once. Jody. |

Chris Himel and Outbound played in Colfax, LA last night for Louisiana Mud Fest.....just got set up and tuned good, the sound techs were tweaking the sound, and along came a "gully washer". My steel and amp got a bath. Even though I needed to clean it up a little (and was going to do so this week before putting new strings on) had to wipe it off with a terry towel. Luckily we went on about 1 hr. late, and had a great time. The sound company had some hugh tarps, so we slung those across the instruments and amps....everything worked out fine. Played a gig last Saturday outside. I was prepared, when the rain started to beat in during middle of the song, had a cover handy though. Didn;t take no time at all to cover my Emmons. That was my first thing to take care of. I really like playing outside . |

I have had that happen tome before Charlie, I was playing at an all day singing with dinner on the grounds. When playing the third song in the our set, the bottom fell out. Another draw back about playing outdoors is the effect the temperature of being out side has on the strings.Especially if they're a fresh set. It could make picker sound awful.

I played on the top deck of a cruise ship above the pool. The salt spray was more than I counted on. It took me hours of cleaning to get it all off. We do a lot of outdoor gigs in the Galveston area. Fun but hot this time of year! _________________ http://www.myspace.com/jaclynjones

The thing about outdoor gigs is you are at the mercy of mother nature,Two of the worst I remember was a benefit for a sick child, down close to Plains Ga, on a flatbed at night,It got down to 19 drgrees that night,[yes I know to some of our yankee friends that's a warm spell, but to us old southern boys,THAT'S COOOOLD] The other one was a 4th of july bash at Idle Hour park in Phenix City Ala.It gets a little warm in july in south Ala, Anyway they had a little stage set up by the lake,NO COVER, The guests that day were some up and coming guys,John Anderson,Leon Everitt[spelling ?] and several more,we had to back them all up,each of them spent maybe twenty minutes to a half hour, when one got through another would come right up,we spent about two hours in 100 degree temps without getting off stage,This was a union gig sponsered by the local radio station, the next week I got a check for 25 bucks, and the slugs took taxes out of it,live and learn,NEVER DID THAT ONE AGAIN.
