I just got this Sho-Bud at a vintage guitar show. I love the way it sounds. Does anyone have info about the history, year, previous owner(s), etc.? I of course know about Shot Jackson and some of his history. Has anyone ever seen others?

Hi TC,
Is it solid woods? Hard to tell but it looks like Brazilian Rosewood ... a better shot of the back and sides would help determine. It looks like a high end model, Good score there. I don't think I have seen a better looking Sho Bro. I am not sure if have seen them with Shots name on there. Do you think this was one of Shots personal guitars ?

Wow, TC, that's a beauty. I can't recall ever seeing a nicer "Sho-Bro."
Could have been one of Shot's. FWIW, I worked at the Sho-Bud store with Shot 1979-83.
I have a 1960s Regal (I think) converted to a 7-string by Shot. I haven't figured out how to post a photo yet.

Hi Todd,
Here is a photo of the back. It's hard for me to tell for sure if the back and side are solid wood but it sure looks like they are solid. There is a bunch of bracing and six dowels (that I can see) that are posts between the top and back I am pretty sure the top is solid spruce.
When I was looking inside it has written in pencil SHOT April '76.

interesting is the shape. sho-bros had their own distinctive shape...i wonder if this was made before he changed the shape and called them 'sho-bros? would like to hear it and i'll still accept it as a donation.

| I'm in agreement with Herb. I had a Shobro at one time, and this guitar is way, way, way beyond the one I owned. Coop might know if it was Shot's. But I don't see any other reason for it's being an obviously custom-made instrument, with the name Shot inlaid in the peghead. |

That is obviously one of Shots personal Sho~Buds, not to be confused with the Sho~Bro's.
There are only 6 or 7 Sho~Bud resos in existence that I ever heard of. Of those, one went to George Edwards, and one to Buddy, with their initials on the headstocks. I beleive they were 8 stringers if I recall correctly, wich I don't always.
Bobbe would know more on this.
Rare Bird T.C., figure late 60's. No tellin what its worth.

I've heard what John Drury said. There were only 6 or 7 of the "Sho-Bud" resos made. Jeff Newman also had a 7 string. All the others were "Sho-Bro's"

Hey T.C. Congratulations on your find! That's a great instrument. I have one on my list of instruments I used to have but let get away. At one point in the seventies I had a ShoBud 7 string reso guitar which I wasn't using at the gig, mostly at home. I needed another electric guitar to make money with so I traded the 'bud for a Fender Telecaster. My 'bud reso was tuned so the the 1st three strings and the bottom three strings were in a bluegrass G tuning. The 4th string right in the middle was an E string so it made it a form of G6th. I liked that so well that today I have two Dobros and one of them has the bottom G string removed and the E string added in the fourth slot and the D and B strings moved to 5 and 6. My other is tuned to straight bluegrass G........JH in Va.

| Beautiful instrument. Just out of curiosity, it looks like the extra string goes right down the middle of the bridge. How do you adjust the resonator screw? |

The bridge is cast and solid all the way across with seven slots. The fourth string sets about 3/8" above the adjustment screw which looks like it would be difficult to adjust.

PS This thing sounds really good to my ear. There is no sound well. Just sound posts. It was made in '76 and I've been told that it was most likely made by a builder named Randy at the Sho-Bud store/shop on Lower Broadway. |

buddy was given a sho-bro or sho-bud that story has it he gave away after a frustrating session which he determined it was a hopeless dog!

| The standard Sho-Bros I have tried at guitar shows haven't had anywhere near the volume and tone of modern resos. But this custom one-off could be different. Man, it sure looks great. |

Buddy's 8-string Sho~Bud reso (not a Sho-Bro but one like TC's) was for sale twice on eBay recently, with no takers at 3K. It had "Big E" on the peghead, and included was a photo of Big E holding it at the recording session. The seller was the fellow who received the guitar as a gift from Buddy at the session.

Hey T.C. Just caught this post(a bit late!) while looking for something else. Excellent find you made there for sure. Just for the record..a good friend of mine, Eddie Gossien, has a 7-string Sho-Bro..sunburst finish, silver fretboard, and "BS" inlaid on headstock for Bobbe Seymour, it's original owner. Randy B. mentioned that Jeff Newman had a 7-string..it was indeed a 6-string that I now have in my posession(maybe he owned more than one?). It has a natural finish, card symbol fretboard, and the headstock has no Sho-Bro logo as it was repaired due to weather damage.Damn fine sounding axe it is! The late Duane Marrs had one identical to the one of which I describe. Respectfully submitted, RK

...and I happened to be the lucky guy to get it. The fellow had it up just before Christmas 2008, located in Indiana. Coincidentally this guy lives five miles from my hometown, which I flew back home to visit with my family during the holidays. I made an offer if it didn't sell in ebay, and...I was just banging away on it this afternoon playing the old Irish song "Down by the Sally Gardens." I love it. It's actually signed by Shot on the inside and dated, I believe 1977 or 1978.
