I recieved my dobro today and have a few questions about a dobro in general. The neck on my dobro is slightly bent upwards, was it made to do that or is there an issue I need to look at? The dobro has a fishman pickup in it and it is not as loud as I want it, what can I do? And the strings im using ( John Pearce ) are really tight, will this warp the neck or is it ok? Just wondering,,,

Austin,
Is this a round neck or square neck dobro? If it's a round neck, is it set up for lap style, slide style or finger style playing? What brand is it? How old is it?
A slight upward bend in a round neck could simply mean that it needs a truss rod adjustment (or lighter gauge strings). A square neck should be flat, but a slight bow or bend isn't going to make any big difference in a square neck being played lap style.
Give us more info and we'll point you in the right direction.

Hey Dave, it is a square neck Dobro made in 1991. Any ideas about the pickup? Could I have it adjusted? It also hums to unless you touch the input jack then it dont hum anymore. I love my dobro but I have a few problems that I hope can be fixed.

| Fishman makes both active and passive pickups, but if it is a passive it needs to see a very high input impedance. If it is an active, check the battery. |

Austin,
What are you seeing with regards to the neck. If it's a gap at the neck heel I would not be concerned at all. Those guitars use a neck stick attachment method and the shims shrink over time.

Have someone reinstall the fishman for you. They have to be just right, and in the transport it probably loosend a bit. They need to be at the right tension on the screwpost. You will also need to run it into a preamp before it goes into your amp or soundboard. Baggs para acoustic dis a good one. For the record I never had any luck getting a fishman washer pickup to sound good at any reasonable volume for stage use. The schertler and new fishman bridge system seem to be the winners so far.

| our dobro player has probably spent $4,000 on trying to get his dobro "loud as he wanted it" with little luck, btw - welcome to acoustic amplification. a good, i mean GOOD pro-level dedicated pre-amp will help, (i dont know if you are just running straight to an amp or not) |

| Most OMI Dobros (pre-Gibson) squarenecks had some gap at the bottom of the neck heel where it meets the body. I've worked on a few through the years and they all seem to have had the same issue. |
