I've been searching for this picture since it was taken, and have just now located it, thanks to my dad. This is from Don's birthday party in 2007 at the Hendersonville First Baptist Church. It was a blast, and I felt very out of place being in the picture. I am really proud to be standing next to some of these fine people.
If anyone in the photo would like a bigger version, I'll be happy to email it.

Cliff,
Thanks for the email and the photos. There are some other pretty fine talents in that photo, too. I’m not sure if you know who they are, but I’ll pass along the ones I know.
Starting in the back row: with sunglasses steel player Smiley Roberts. Next to him is Ron Elliott who worked for folks like Stonewall Jackson, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, Don Helms, Iva Lee Roberts (Kayton Roberts wife who played keyboard and sang—she just died from stage 4 lung cancer a couple of months back), Pete Wade in the gray sport coat--my very favorite electric lead guitar player, the late and great John Hughey, Kayton Roberts in the green plaid shirt, Penn Pennington in the white open collar shirt who has been with Jack Greene for about 20 years as a lead guitarist (he’s also a fine steel player).
Kneeling down front with the mustache is Lynn Owsley—Ernest Tubb’s last steel player, David McCormick—CEO of the Ernest Tubb Record Shops, traditional singer Melanie Renfrew with the blonde hair.
Three of them—Don Helms, John Hughey, and Iva Lee Roberts are all gone now.
Just thought you might like to know who some of these folks were.
Take care,
Eddie |
