I live in Houston and I've visited Herb's shop/store several times and I can tell you he is a genuine "original" person. I mean that in a nice way. He will spend lots of time with you, showing you licks and telling stories of the old days. I tried to buy an S10 from him in '99, but his contractor who made the aluminum parts got cancer and production came to a halt. This was my first pedal steel effort and I bought a Carter instead.
I think the Remingtons were mostly well made and very playable. Herb didn't play E9th, instead A6 and he tried to get me to buy an A6 model, but I'm glad I didn't. Herb does well with the tuning, but it's better to stick with the conventional. He did make E9th models, including D10's, but I've felt that if he played E9th he might have put more passion into the making of his steels. |
