Mica. Lacquer scares me. Don't want it scratched or banged up. |

Lacquer. Who cares if it gets scratched up. It just looks better with age. Honest play wear is just a sign of a well loved instrument. |

The mica that I actually hate, is the fake birds-eye maple and fake rosewood. If you are really proud of mica, be proud for it to look like mica. I don't mind solid colors, and some of the wild patterns that some of the plastic comes in, but please don't insult your own sense of taste by saying you like the look of mica over wood, and then putting on fake wood grain. |

I like the combination of both. My Ritt is all mica except the front which is lacquer. _________________ Custom Rittenberry SD10

I must say that I agree with Bobby with regard to the fake wood-grain mica - it's ghastly!
My Emmons and my Derby are both in gleaming black mica - surely the coolest look a steel can have?
PS: My favourite non-lacquer steel has to be that new MSA that Randle Currie has with the blue-gray paisley pattern in the finish - but then I guess that's neither lacquer nor mica! I'm confused... ![Confused](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Currently, I have one PSG and it's a lacquered-body (Emmons P/P). All the rest of the guitars I've owned have been mica bodied (Emmons P/P's and Sierra). The Emmons' have/had aluminum necks; the Sierra, wood.
Beside the inherent beauty of a lacquer body, I've experienced tonal differences. The mica bodies tended to be brighter and maybe a little more harsh in tone, when compared to the lacquer body. Although, the Sierra did have a mellow tone. Kind of like an archtop jazz guitar (typical for Sierra guitars).
I know the lacquer bodies are extremely fragile... because of that fact, I'm extra careful.
Keep on pickin'!

Depends on the guitar, but I guess I have to go with lacquer since a ZB Custom is the limit for me... on the other hand, I love the look of an Emmons original in black mica.. the proportions and look of those is perfect and timeless. Other than that, I don't really care as long as it works and sounds good. Some of the modern guitars (lacquer or mica) tend to look a bit gaudy looking to me. |

I currently own a gloss black mica. That and Lapis Blue are the only mica colors I like.
I detest wood colored mica.
If had the the cash on hand I would have chosen Lacquer.But... I am hard on my insrtuments, and probably would have damaged the finish by now. However I do believe I've noticed a slight tonal difference with the lacquer one I've once owned.
One day I'll own a 12 string lacquer !!

lacquer for me.
I think it's more beautifull, and it makes the guitar unique, no 2 guitars have the same pattern in the wood. _________________ ----------------------------------

Damir asked:
why not both? why does it have to be one?
Because the question was - which do you prefer? If you like them equally, then that's the answer.....
