Hi Bob
I was wondering the same thing.
I have an album called 'Buck Owens on the bandstand'
Without digging it out, I'm sure Jay played on it and did an instrumental 'please release me'. The other guys in the band were Ken Presley on drums, Kenny (?) pierce on bass and don rich guitar, fiddle.
Kenny (?) Pierce sang a Willie Nelson song called 'Touch Me'on which Jay played beautifully.
I'm not too sure whether Jay played on all the album or if Mooney did some tracks. Very west coast styles. The sound is very reminiscent of the old Fender cable steels. I'm sure someone will know.
It's one my most favourite albums in my collection.

Barry,
Your right it was Kenny Pierce on bass, and singing Touch Me, he was around 17, he was a Modesto Boy, I had the Great Pleasure of being part of his band in the 70's and 80's..in Modesto, Ca..He was a great singer and bass Player, knew 10000000 songs!!!.. He has Pass on, but still lives in my heart, I Will post a link soon to hear him sing some Buck songs..We had one of the finest bands I ever got to be part of, played 6 nights a week with him, and Janice Allen, she is on my CDs... we had a 6 pice band, I'm not sure Jay played on this record, but will find out...

Hi David.
Thanks for that info'.
I always thought that he sang that song beautifully, with great feeling, and the steel playing seems to reflect that emotion. Did he ever make any recordings or albums. He had a unique lilt to his voice. I'd love to hear any if he did.
I wonder does anyone out there know what turns Jay's career took after that association with Buck and maybe what steel he used on that recording.
There is another song on that album called 'Sweathearts in heaven' that also deserves a mention.
Thanks again David
Barry

I'm pretty sure I remember him sitting behind a fender 1000 on the album cover. That's sure what it sounds like.

Thanks for all the input, I also had the Buck Owens on the band stand and got to see Jay with Buck and Don in Yuma Arizona Just before they made it big. I had heard that Jay got fired for playing Mooney style on some one elses recording. ??? Boy Jay could change a string fast. You had to with the old Fender 1000.

Jay is all over that particular album with Mooney on a few songs (King of Fools, I Can't Stop My Lovin You, and One Way Love). I've long been mesmerized by Jay's tone, his melodies, and the emotion he mustered up. Saw Mill, Touch Me, Cottonfields, Sweethearts in Heaven (Buck and Don's duet) are incredible displays of Jay's total mastery on the Fender 1000.. and his solo rendition of Release Me on that album is one of the all-time classics...hands down. Check out Jay on Buck's Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat album, especially the songs, Over and Over, and Getting Used To Losing You. Simply incredible and totally West Coast. Believe me, you don't hear that type of steel guitar playing today on recordings today that I know of. Larry Petree is the last person I know of who had some contact with Jay.

Wow! Can't wait to see what you guys dig up. I believe I saw Jay with Buck at the Nugget early on. I thought my memory was playing tricks on me as it "must" have been Tom. I was so focused on Don Rich (God rest his soul).

Keep it coming boys. This is very interesting. Any photographs?
