I've looked all through the archives and I can't find a post I saw here on the forum where someone just got their Stage One PSG.
I'm trying to hear from someone who owns one of these to tell me how they sound, wear, if they play easy and are they really lightweight. |

I actually have at my house a Zum student model maybe made before they called them Stage One, (or were they always called that?). I'm tuning it up for a friend that is going to learn on it. My take is that it is a really great guitar for the money. It sounds real good and is solid, lightwieght and has all the basic E9 stuff. I may get one someday if I start flying to gigs.

I have a Stage One PSG and like it a lot. Its my first PSG and was recommended to me by people on this forum. It stays in tune well, is very stable on the floor and sounds great. I was told these are nicer than the Carter Starter and GFI Student. I dont have much experience but I like the guitar a lot. |

I bought a used stage one as a second guitar and I love it. Its lightweight enough to easily carry but stays put while you play. Very stable tuning too!
Also the big advantage over the carter starter is adaptability. Even though the stage one is not designed to be altered it is possible to do so. I wanted to match the set-up of my other guitar and Doug Earnest (the builder) was happy to help me out with parts and suggestions on what and how to do it. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/ggefell/ |

That's the one Calvin, except the front apron is turquoise! The top is black. I may still get one someday! What kind of pickups do the new ones have?

Dave, the current pickup is a custom made humbucker that really sounds good and is quiet.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words. _________________ Doug Earnest

I have been working on steel guitars since the mid seventies and have had every major brand in the shop at one time or another. I recently had an old Zum student model,(now the Stage One guitar), in for repair. It played good and sounded great. I play a pro model Zum D-10. The little student model was up there pretty close as far as tone. I believe this is a very good guitar and Doug is a pretty good guy too. |

Calvin, I began producing the Stage One independently of ZumSteel about two years ago. I made the current changes at that time, including the humbucker pickup, pro tuning keys, raised neck, colored fretboard position markers, four knee levers and aluminum pedal rack. Adjustable legs became standard equipment about a year ago. Number 100 is going out the door tomorrow....not a big number but pretty good for a one man part time job and going through a few growing pains. I'm working on a lightweight package right now for those who travel with their guitars quite a bit, still a few little bugs to work out. By the way, the Zum student guitar has always been called the Stage One, it just wasn't well known.
Eddie Lane, your kind words mean a lot, thank you very much. Eddie is a fine player and talented repair guy for those of you who don't know that. _________________ Doug Earnest

Stuart, just my 0.02 worth. I'm not a real player, more of a perpetual learner. I tried one out a couple weeks ago.
My take was the Stage One was an exceptionally nice sounding guitar. You could have fooled me that humbucker sounded nice and lively like you would expect a single coil, but no hum.
The action was real smooth and very easy compared to my Excel. Seemed to stay in tune.
Great job Doug!! Beautiful instrument, good sound, looks real nice and sturdy underneath.
And nice and light. |

Paul Arntson, I haven’t heard you play but I’m sure you being modest.
I don’t play Steel guitar at all except in my mind. I’ve listened all my life to E9 pedal steel played by my father and my grandfather and ever PSG recording I could get my hands on. I can recognize the E9 licks and write them out in notation and tab, how and where on the E9 neck they were played.
I do all the transcribing of new songs and licks for Bo.
I do all my playing in notation with Tabledit, Band in a Box, a good spread sheet, the application of a great deal of music theory and thankful that most top 40 country has always been where the PSG is concerned mostly cliché and for that reason alone it is not hard to do what I do. I forgot to mention that I own about every sheet of PSG tab that was ever written.
To make a long story shorter, I’m buying this guitar for Bo to use so he’ll quit complaining about having to set up and move around those heavy D-10s every time I want him to try out and practice the transcriptions.
He’s about 2 yrs behind and I haven’t transcribed anything in the past 3 months and he hasn’t even noticed.
Maybe this Stage One will get things back on track. |
