Yet another fantastic weekend sponsored by the TSGA has just passed for steel guitar players and lovers of steel guitar music. The show was bigger and better than ever and the line-up was as strong as it could be ...being anchored by the amazing Buddy Emmons.
I personally was overwhlemed by the generosity of the crowd and was blessed by their acceptance of my efforts. Of course, I could have been getting some sympathy applause because I turned the big "55" on Sunday at the show. (I am legally now a "Senior Citizen" and have papers to prove it!) I want to thank Albert Talley & Buddy Bryant for coaxing the crowd to sing Happy Birthday to me on Sunday afternoon. (It was obvious that those in attendance were musicians and not singers!!! I loved it anyway.) I also want to thank my beautiful wife Donna for making the arrangements for my celebration. She's my rare jewel.
One extremely special moment for me was when I was asked to be a participant in a jam set filling in for the incomparable Hal Ruggs Saturday night. Of course, no one could fill his shoes and it took Russ Hicks, Randy Beavers, Jack Matthews and myself just to try. Actually, we were just sitting in for Hal until he gets back next show. We know he will be back stronger than ever. (Hal, we missed you very much. Hurry up and get better.)
Sorry to be so long winded with all this. It was a very special weekend for me. Here are some of the photos that I captured in between eating birthday cake......
Four man jam set.. 4Man
The amazing Buddy Emmons
The crowds were large and attentive when the Big E played Crowd1
Crowd2
Crowd3
Herb Steiner with his trusty push/pull Herb
A few other highlights for me....
Jerry Brightman
Jim Cohen
Randy Beavers
and of couse, the beautiful and talented Laney Hicks Laney
(singing with Randy on his set)
What a great weekend we all had!
And I heard a rumor they're going to do it again next year. Thanks TSGA for a wonderful memory.

And I thought you were gonna rave on about the indoor plumbing in the hotel.
Happy Birthday! |

Tommy --
Thanks for the photos! What a great way to share the memories! (I was wondering what you were gonna do with all those pictures you were takin'.)
Now, about that generosity ... there was no one there any more generous than you.
And about that age 55, let the record reflect that I am NEARLY three years younger than that.
See you next year,
Mac

The magic for me was all four of you guys playing the last chorus on Crazy Arms. What a sound!!! It's too difficult to explain the feeling, except for goosebumps and neck hairs!!! Tell me if I'm wrong, but I saw that as a direct "Get Well Hal" message from the fearsome foursome. |

Yes we all had a great time in Dallas. The picking was great and the fellowship was wonderful and Tommy Dodd played his butt off. |

Tommy,
Watching and hearing you and Hal Rugg's "Four Horsemen" (Tommy Dodd, Jack Matthews, Randy Beavers, Russ Hicks) play Rose City Chimes Saturday night was "magic" to me. Thanks for sharing your talents! |

Tommy...
What a great time, and to get to spend a little time helping with your birthday cake was great. Meriul and I sure enjoyed all the music, but your tribute to Hal was truly special. Keep in touch, and know that we love you.
