For sure you need to get down to Jim Palenscar's store in North San Diego County in Oceanside, Steel Guitars of North County:

Rick Schmitt is as good as it gets for steel guitar in socal. He plays the happy hour gig from 5-9 at McCabe's in Oceanside. If you're going to Jim's shop, McCabe's is a MUST. Rick is the real deal!

I'll be the sub for Mike Small tonight at the Cowboy Country in Long Beach/Lakewood. It's a very nice place, but I believe there's a cover charge.

Hi Richard....Just a thought...You really should try to make it down to Jim's cool steel shop in Oceanside (North San Diego County) this Friday! If you come down before rush hour traffic, you can have a relaxed time oogling all Jim's inventory, then come see my band in Oceanside (5 minutes away)and have dinner, finally you can catch John M. at the Swallow's in San Juan at night....All right off the 5 fwy on the way back to La Palma. You might actually get the impression that Country Music is alive and well in California. Shocked

A tip: You might want to call Jim first just to make absolutely sure the Doctor is in. If you do come by, please come introduce yourself!

Jeremy...thanks for the nice words bro!

Richard, time allowing, I'll actually be doing what Rick Schmidt reco's: going to heckle him in Oceanside, then jamming to my gig at the Swallows in San Juan Capistrano. Hope you can join me at both dives!

If you're a player and interested in a California steel lesson, just send me a private message here on the forum; I teach in my San Pedro home studio, that's near Long Beach, about 45 minutes from La Palma.

This may be different than how they teach in Texas, but in California we always start with breathing exercises to relax...guided meditation with incense and sitars in the background...and finally exploring the soulful blessedness of the pedal steel.
