Did you guys happen to see Talor Hicks perform last night on American Idol? If not there was a guy sitting on stage playing a lap steel and the camera was on him several times. Close enough that you could clearly see his bullet bar and finger picks but I don't know who he is or what brand that white steel was.

Great exposure for the lap steel.

I watched a recorded copy of the show, thus I could stop and start easily, and could rewind as often as I wished. Although he played mostly (if not all) single note runs, I concluded from watching that he was using an open E tuning (top down, E, B, G#, E, B, G# or E, B, G#, E, B, E). I think the last note was actually a diad on strings 1 and 2. I suspect he was a lead guitar man. He did a good job.

From the brief camera shots, looked like a Supro to me.

My thoughts exactly...I only suspect it was a Supro, because I recently got one, and the headstock looked exactly the same. On a side note, I felt badly for the fiddle player who was playing his stones off but got lost in the mix.

The player was Jay Leach. Jay is, as Roy guessed, highly accomplished on both lead and steel guitar. He's also as nice a guy as you could possibly meet.

Jay always plays at the annal L.A. steel jam. We always enjoy his playing.

Plus, he's the only steel guitarist in town with even less hair than me. Mr. Green
