Ive never had or used any of the JBL speakers in my rig, but Ive always wanted to try them.
I run about 80 watts through my rig & was wondering what would be a good JBL to start with. A 15" would be my choice, but which model,,,D130E ,D130F or ???
My rig is a Revelation, Lexicon MPX 100 & Randal 80 Watt power Amp.
What would those who know tons more than I do about LBLs, use ?

My 2c
I would recommend purchasing a JBL D130 4ohm speaker and cabinet directly from Gary Walker. This will be a reconed speaker, and can handle the power ranges you mentioned. Mr Walker knows.
(This is Walker Stereo Steel)
Nice rig!

The D130F is the classic steel and guitar speaker. I think the E was for bass. Supposedly it has less sparkle in the highs, but some people like their mellower sound for steel.
I have some of the vintage JBLs, but my next purchase will be to try the Weber California with a neo magnet. These supposedly have the JBL sound, but with a little more power handling, and less weight. |

The E130 is a full range 15" speaker for musical instruments.
The E140 was the bass version.
E series had ceramic magnets. D's and K's have alnico.
D130's and D130F's seem to be the preferred speaker for pedal steel.
K130's are more rugged, will handle more power though..Jerry |

You can't beat a D-130F. I had one in my Twin for several years. Last year I retired it and replaced it with a Weber Neo 15. I perceive a bit less of a midrange scoop in the Weber which makes it a great choice if you double on steel and guitar. For steel alone my first choice is the D-130F, but the Weber sounds great, too (plus it is lighter). |

For use as a guitar or steel speaker, the rating for a D130F is about 60 watts, less if the cone is really old. It's possible to use one with a 100 watt Twin or Vibrosonic, if you use the volume pedal like most steelers, with it backed off at least half-way as you attack your notes, reserving the rest for sustain. If you dime the amp and use the volume pedal near its maximum (or play without a volume pedal), you can blow the speaker. If you ever need to max out the amp and the volume pedal, you need two D130Fs, the same as you need two D120Fs. And you will want ear plugs.
For use in a full spectrum speaker system, the rating is about 25 watts, and I guess would be about the same for bass.

The D-130 should work fine. The D-140 is for a bass, but can be re-coned with a 130 cone for guitar; I had this done on two of my JBL's. It is best to get a JBL re-cone kit for best results, but I have used a 'generic' JBL recones on a 12" and a 15" D series with good results.
Thanx,
Jim |
