A friend of mine had some music from a documentary playing in the car.
As soon as I heard a pedal steel playing I was 100% convinced it was Ricky Davis playing.
I heard Ricky Davis many many times and recognize his sound and phrasing...I felt kinda proud of myself.
I asked for the singer,looked it up and was shocked to see it wasn't Ricky.....it was Lloyd Green.
I told Ricky,and he told me he was honoured...Neil Flanz understood the confusion as we all are somehow influenced by lloyd Green...check it out:"

| Oh yeah. I have some Ray Price albums and some of the cuts were played by Buddy Emmons and some of the cuts were done by Jimmy Day. I can't tell the difference unless I look at the credits. In fact I was playing some of the cuts for a friend and asked him who was playing steel. He got it wrong almost every time. |

Hi Olaf, Just so I understand you..You heard the Secret Life of Roses in the car and thought it was Ricky Davis? If that is correct then I can't understand how you could be mistaken. I mean..this tune has Lloyd written all over it and didn't sound like Ricky at all.
I'll agree with your basic premise though, it is very hard to distinguish players some times. |

I think that Buddy Emmons and Jimmy Day used to imitate each other on Ray Price recording sessions, just to throw us off!

| You will hear a lot of Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Pete drake, Weldon Myrick, Walter haynes, Bud Isaacs, and Jerry Byrd in all steel players, especially those my age. A lot of Paul Franklin in the younger players. Also, Rick Davis is one of the best out there. Jody. |

you are right Bent,I heard Ricky play so many many times in Austin (the last 6 years) and recognize his sound and playing,
Ricky himself told me he is very influenced by Lloyd Green(who isn't?).
I heard Lloyd Green,through recordings,I think the last 20 years,from Johnny Paycheck's Little Darlin'years to his studio work with everyone else...so I heard Lloyd in more different styles and periods.
On recommandation I listened to Ricky Skaggs's "Nothing Can hurt you"and understood your comment that The Secret Life of Roses is Lloyd Green all over......it's funny though when you think you know it,and it turs out different,thnx for you reactions.. |

Olaf, thanks for the explanation ..I was hoping you wouldn't take offense to my remarks and you didn't.
It is all in the ear that hears it. Some people can pick out a player. I am one of those who are lousy at it. In "Secret Life.." however, I guess the fact that I have seen the video so many times made it incomprehensible that Lloyd should be mistaken for anyone else.

Thanks for the post Bent,it didn't feel as an offend at all,it's just a moment in time,unexpected, in a car,going to do something....and all of a sudden there is this beautiful sound with this magical playing.....my memory could have gone through hundreds of names of steel players i know I and heard all my life,but only one name pops up,: "Ricky Davis".
The afterthought is as you'd guess,"ofcourse it was Lloyd Green"....that's the reason I made a topic as I could imagine we all have such moments,when we think...thanks y'all for your reactions... |

Like I told Olaf; that is a honor to be mistaken for someone like LLOYD GREEN!!!
But I also mirror Donny; inthat; NOBODY can sound like and can do it like Mr. Nashville.
Sure I wear my influences on my sleeve and Lloyd has been certainly one of the top; along with Tom Brumley and Weldon and Hal.
But when I do play; I often ask myself, "How would Lloyd approach this; how would he play that"...But I always seem to interject my own style into it as something Tom B. told me long ago: "Hear what you think would sound good; sing it in your head; then play it on your steel, and when it's time to play it; play the hell out of it; and when it's not time to play; Don't play".

Oh and I totally left out another huge influence of Jimmy Day....>Sorry Jimmy RIP....
Also; out of all them....only Lloyd And Weldon are still with us......my heart is heavy thinking about that...I miss them all.

Thanks Olaf; for the very kind words.
Yeah I was a little uncomfortable being mistaken for Lloyd Green....>but Lloyd emailed me when he saw this and said he felt bad cause I was his friend; But it's alright, I generally don't get that uncomfortable; so it was a very mild uncomfort....with a little proudness there too; that Lloyd has been such an influence on me(that I could possibly in a one-in-a-million shot, be mistaken for..ha.).
