Here we go again... Dan, no offense meant as you may not be aware, but this subject is one of the most actively and hotly debated subjects on the Forum. If you do a search you will have enough reading for days on end, and we won't all have to type it all over again.

By the way, just to make a long story short, it turns out the answer is 'Yes'. Wink

I believe to some extent the accessories do affect the sound. This can easly be proven by disconnecting the toys connected in line with the guitar, including the volum pedal. There also is some difference in the guitars . I have had a Fender/Sho-Bud for about 26 years, I played daily until the last yeat. I now play a MSA. They are totally different guitars. Heres the kicker. I recently had the MSA converted bach to a 12 sring. The person who converted the guitar has played nearly all hs life. He made the guitar sound totally differrent. So IMHO all thee variables, from my experiences, make a difference. the largest being the player

I say it is all in your head.Your brain directs your hands. If there is something your brain cant comprehend then your hands won't follow.
How did they do it in the olden days? There where no Nashville400's, Steelkings, Profex's or Tubefex's.

Tone is definately 100% in the gadgets, the more gadgets in the chain the better, and don't forget that the more expensive units will make you sound even better, especially if you have a super-expensive multi-faceted strobe tuner with a flashing display that wouldn't look out of place on a Las Vegas one-arm-bandit gambling machine Winking

Clearly, it's in the gadgets we buy, otherwise we'd have to learn to play the instrument...

Yep, it's all in the gadgets. Whoever spends the most money on preamps, effects, tuners, etc.... sounds the best........ that is until somebody like Dicky Overbey comes along with nothing but an RV-3 and blows everyone away. I'd say a "decent" setup and a lot of practice and talent is what makes it work.

I have to say this: A couple of days ago I was fooling around with a gadget: an old MXR 10 band equalizer. And just to test out the unit, I plugged my hollow body jazz guitar into it. Now the guitar sounds good by itself, but that EQ unit shot its tone up into the stratosphere.

I've not tried it out on my steel yet, but if it does for my steel what it did for that guitar, hey, we're not just talking about tone to the bone, but tone right down to the capillarities inside the marrow.

Tone is in the hands, the guitar, the amp, AND the gadgets, when they are used properly.

You must have top-notch equipment! No self-respecting pro would ever use a cheap guitar. Even in the world of straight guitar players, none of them would ever use a cheap, off-brand...like a Danelectro (whose guitars were sold by Monkey Wards and Sears Lowbuck).

(Uhh, that is...except for Dave Matthews. And Link Wray, and Bruce Springsteen. And, oh yeah, Frank Zappa. Of course, let's not forget Kid Rock. Yes, I think Jimmy Page played one, too. Then there was Stevie Ray Vaughn. And...well...you get the point. Razz )

Any fool knows the music played on a four-thousand dollar guitar sounds twice as good as the same music played on a two-thousand dollar guitar. Laughing

Yep. Lotsa 'spensive gadgets. That's where it's at!
