Mike,
I just got a call from a mother-of-the-bride asking how many ampheres our ESCORT 2000 needs.
I looked all over the thing and find no mention of it.
Can you help?

just using Ohms law, if the amp really puts out
300 watts, the max it should draw at max power should
be about 2.5 amps. If it only draws 70 watts like it says on the back of the unit it would only be .5 amps.
I've never seen a amp that efficient to produce 300 watts of audio power without drawing quite a bit more than 70 watts from the wall.
I be curious to see what Mike has to say. They have some sharp guys at Peavey enginering.

I assume that you meant "amperes" and not "ampheres.
Chances are that you will not find a value for the current drawn by a device expressed as amperes. What is typical, however is that virtually all electronic gear will specify the voltage (volts) and the power (watts). Therefore you can calculate quite easily the current drawn by the device as follows: Power = voltage X current. Expressed as a simple formula it becomes P = (E)(I). Transposing for the current I, I = P/E. Simple example: Given is the voltage at 120 volts and the power as 120 watts. I = P/E = 120/120 = 1 ampere. Hope this helps. Break out the calculator.
John Gould alludes to the fact that no piece of gear is 100% efficient, therefore the output power does not relate directly to the stated power requirements on the data tag. Use the formula. It's worst case.

If you can put 70 watts in and get 300 watts out then Peavey engineering would be even bigger news than Lindsay Lohan's latest tattoo. Say goodbye to carbon compound emissions, global warming, cabinet drop, nuclear waste, and dependence on foreign oil. |

Let me go out on a limb here and say that the
Escort is 80% to 85% efficient as to what it pulls from the wall to audio output. It would make it some where in the 3.3 to 3.5 amp range. I've never had one apart but I would think the fuse in the power supply would give a clue as to max amps it will pull.
I know the new Escort uses a class D power section which is more efficient and puts out more power.

Well I guess I should pay more attention, I've been looking at the specs for the Escort 3000 instead of the 2000. Well the 2000 only puts out a total of 150 watts 75 per side. The service manual for this unit says it will draw a max of 340 watts from the wall and if that's the case max amps drawn would be 2.8333
I would like to still hear from Mike and the guys from Peavey on this one.

Thanks. I already told her/them it would pull around 3, so looks like I was close.
And yes, I've been eyeballing that ESCORT 3000, too.
If it sounds nearly as good as the 2000, it'll be a keeper.
