I have noticed on some tab for C6 they will have it marked for D open. On mine the first string open is G.How would one compensate for that on playing the C6?

From what I've seen, it looks like Buddy Emmons was the driving force behind the top D string. Many have followed suit and use the D string and many still use the G. Herby Wallace is one of the "big name" Steeler's that I know that still uses the G. I still use the G, although I've tried the D string and it does have some advantages, but as I play a lot of "old style" steel the G works best for me.
To compensate the C string up two frets is D or the E string down two is D and they can be usually used on tab with the D string, depending on how or where it's used. On the "standard" C6th setup the C string is pulled to D and that can be used too. |

I started out using the G on top and thought I'd try the D on the 1st tring.
For me it didn't seem to fit my style.
It felt too much like the E9th just in C6 to me.
At one seminar I took from Herby Wallace I asked him what he had on top because he is one of my Favorite players. He said he uses the G.
I figured if it was good enough for him, it was good enough for me.
I find that for some bluegrass stuff I have to play at times that the C,E,G on top works great for finger rolls.

Change your first string to D. Add the C to C# change on a knee lever. Then, 4 frets up, you will get your G string back again. See the link below for details that will make your whole approach to C6 change. You will have a ton of new positions and playing melodies will be so much easier. The C to C# change is a lot like the E to F knee lever on E9!

I would love to have an 11 or 12 string C6th so I could add both. I will admit that I didn't use the G very much when I had it (didn't care for the tonality of it) and use the D string often. But much of that is due to the change in the styles of music played today. If I had a band that played a lot of Hank, Lefty and the real old timers, I would probably put the D on string 1, G on 2 and on down the line and drop the low C (which I do use also but could live without. |
