I had a good time last Saturday playing with harmonica great, Charlie McCoy, at the Fleamasters Music Hall in Ft Myers, FL.
Charlie is an amazing player - well, I knew that, but wasn't prepared for the wide range of his musical ability. A good guy, too, and it was as enjoyable a gig as I've played in a long time!
I'm either getting a nod of approval here, or he's laughing at me!
He sings, too....
I don't usually let anyone touch my 000-28, but I made an exception this time!
Thanks, Charlie, for the great playing!!! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

I used to love Charlies playing, I still have every album he put out. Not only was his playing top notch, he always had the best musicians in Nashville playing on them. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

That had to be a real treat. I met Charlie about two years ago. He came up to me to introduce himself.
We spoke for a while, got a bite to eat and just hung out. What a nice guy.
By the way Roger, Van told me he was really glad to hear from you. |

That's great Roger! I'm going to go listen to "Theme From A Summer Place" with Charlie and Lloyd. |

Jerry:
Where can I hear that tune? I love '...a Summer Place'!
For all Charlie's amazing high-speed playing, my two favourite moments on Saturday were 'Over The Rainbow' and 'The Water Is Wide'; he gets such a broad, fat sound, with a subtle vibrato....
Ben:
Thanks for hooking me up with Van! I wrote him first, then he replied - today I sent him a slightly longer email, and I hope to hear more from him soon.
I'm obliged to you. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

Roger--
The catalogue of top-drawer musicians you've gotten to play with or alongside (not to mention the run-of-the-mill ones like the Beatles ) has me green with envy!

Hi, Brint....
The most musically-satisfying of all was a short tour I did with songwriter Sonny Curtis. He is a wonderful arranger, writer and guitar-player, a Prince of a human being, with a fund of stories of his days with Buddy Holly, the Crickets and the Everly Brothers. His songs - 'Walk Right Back', 'I Fought The Law', 'More Than I Can Say', 'I'm No Stranger To The Rain', and many more - cover a wide musical spectrum. We ('Hogan's Heroes') learned a great deal about playing with economy and dynamics, and I'm happy to say that Sonny and I are friends to this day.
The biggest personal thrill of all by a hundred miles? Getting a call in the 1980s to play guitar for a handful of dates with my boyhood idol, Lonnie Donegan. I can only imagine what the 13-year old Roger Rettig would have thought if he'd known that such a thing was even possible....

Sweet! Charlie played bass on one of my favorite albums (John Wesley Harding) and delivered some of the most unusual, yet perfect lines. |
