Here is a link to an excerpt from the Three Stooges movie "Rocking in the Rockies" 1945.
The tuning on the closest neck to Joachim seems to be a C6 of some type. Is this right and can any of the experts hazard a guess as to the tuning on the outside neck?
While Joaquin's right hand seems to be curled in a classic position for blocking with the side, the small amount footage here seems to show that pick blocking is the predominant method he is using. Is this a fair observation? Is this how he achieved his strident single note lines? |

It looks to me like the rear neck is an E9 or D9 with a G# or F# on top, because he plays the slant 9th chord with a higher pitch in a lower position than would be on a C6.

Well I think my first guess is incorrect because the first phrase on the outside neck is below. It is pretty much a G6 arpeggio and he plays it pretty much straight across the neck with the little dip for the minor seventh.
(or is it a 9th tuning with a dip for the maj 6th?..... No, it must be a 6th tuning because I can't see how you can play the 16th notes at that speed with a change in position.)
Played around the 7th fret it suggests a C6 tuning or maybe D6, but what gets me is that I can get the second phrase or something like it also on a C6th tuning starting at about the same spot on the neck. (You can't see the end of the phrase.)
Maybe in the recording he actually played both phrases on the C6th and mimed a neck change for the camera. Far fetched?

Guy, I guess you are right!
I tried playing his licks and ended up in a sixth tuning (A6 in my case) with both phrases. |
