Hello,

I am sure my television appearance tonight will not cause quite the stir or 130-post long topics that Robert's did, but I do hope that some of my Forum friends will tune in just the same. A show I taped last week will air tonight/tomorrow (Thursday/Friday) morning at 1:35 AM: Last Call with Carson Daly on NBC. Here's a link to the show's site:
http://www.nbc.com/Last_Call_with_Carson_Daly/

I am a huge fan of Paul Franklin and Buddy Charlton, and play clean as a whistle. Just me, the Williams and a reissue Fender twin. I hope some of you might tape it or tune in, as this is a big deal for me, my debut on national network TV, not a bad moment for the steel, I hope. Look forward to hearing any comments, criticism anyone has.

Thanks for reading my post.

Gerald...I'll try to stay up that late if I can.(It's hard when I don't have a gig + my old VCR doesnt record anymore)
Anyway...Congrats!!! That is a big deal.

Are you playing with a band, or just you and your steel & amp?

Whoops. I should have mentioned I am playing with a Welsh psychedelic band called Super Furry Animals. We play a mellow sort of roots rock song of theirs called "Hello Sunshine". The notion of me playing alone on NBC is pretty hilarious.

I think you can hear a version of the song, with their second guitar player doing his thing on an ancient Fuzzy pedal steel on their site; I took a decidedly more traditional approach when I played with them. I've been told there are some nice closeups of my hands...

I can't believe that the steel guitar has sunk so low that we need to play gigs for small animals with drug problems that come from some country known for grape jelly. If this is the future of steel guitar god have mercy on us !

It's true Bob, when bands are forced to use the likes of me on on TV, the steel guitar has really gone to the dogs. I hope I can hold my head high tomorrow. Do hope some of you will watch it.

Hi, Gerald, and many thanks for posting this one, I love to see steelers on TV. Just went in and watched, Great job! I was impressed with the overall camera work on the spot, very flattering to the band and fitting to the song. And I believe it might be the first time I've seen a Williams guitar on TV! I guess they didn't ask you to tape the logo over... Great to see you. I hope to be doing some TV spots soon myself with Sugarland. Meet you in the green room?

Bob, I think it's all the fault of those damn young people with their torn clothing and rock music. They are destroying the steel guitar and all it stands for. Probably not even any rhinestones on the whole bandstand.

Hi Gerald, caught the show and I loved the "soft rock" style of the song you did. Your work was very tasty and well executed. Enjoyed it.

Wow, thanks you guys. I was pleasantly surprised at how loud the steel was in the mix, and that my tone was better than I remembered it being throught that rented Twin. What a hoot to see yourself on TV. Robyn Byrd? My God, is she still on Howard? And regarding the threads, I'll have you know that I wore a nice vintage Western shirt. No holes no place. Thanks to all for your comments. I am going to start a thread in a moment on a curious irony that struck me last night:
Welsh psychedelic band Super Furry Animals: steel guitar.
Alleged country artist Kenny Chesney: no steel! Please weigh in.

I couldn't find streaming video of your perf on the TV show website, anyone else able to post that? That site is lame and out of date, ugh. Would love to see your perf.

And how you like the Williams guitar, btw? What setup do you play?

Gerald,

I tried to stay up but couldn't make it. Wish I could have listened in. Congratulations. Not many ever get an opportunity to play on a nationwide network.

I taped it and just watched---while waiting for the wildlife segment about hairy whales that you were kind enough to alert us to (which apparently never aired--I still don't know anything about this species) I did see a band with a pedal steel guitar!! Does anyone know who was the steeler? He looked and sounded cool. Some good camera work of a fine looking Williams and some close-up hand shots. Were they using a hand double for that? Ah the mysteries of show biznizz.

Gerald, now I seen when you shot this show.
I'll have to wait for it to be steamed.

Howard the only steel I have ever noticed on Robin Byrd show is attached to the performers.

If only she had an engineer doing the color correction who wasn't color blind.

Ah NYC ; den of iniquity,
but there are steel players there, go figure!

Gerald - I just happened to see your performance as I was doing my "surf-down" prior to turning off the television. I was about to hit the off button when I heard you. I continued to watch for two reasons: I thought you sounded pretty good, and sometimes I have to watch something like that and wonder how crap like that actually makes it to a national media outlet. You were definately an asset to whatever it was they were trying to do. Since I am just now seeing this thread, I'm proud to say my hunch was correct - Some excuse for a musical group imported a musician to help them out.

Dear Kenny,

Thanks for watching, man, I really appreciate it that you took time to check the show out. I've been playing for only four years and I'm happy to hear that even if you didn't dig the band I was playing with, that you watched anyway, to hear me play with them. May the god of steel guitar smile on you, as he does on me occasionally!

Love the Super Furry Animals. Their last 2 albums are fabulous!! Great live too.

Are you touring w/ em or was this a one off?
