Just like to express my views here !!!
What a steel player, he has been the biggest inspiration to me!
Met him once and he sat next to me in my moms car at at steel guitar convention in 1999 !!! Played a tape of a recording which is here on myspace named "nashville to no where " and he said great playing !!!
But to the point he is unreal and has taken the steel guitar into a new dimension !!! (Not taking away the other greats by the way)
What Paul has done and the admiration his has got he has earned !!!
Early posts from other people say his too adored !!!
I dont get that!!!, Paul has reflected so many great things his done with the steel guitar, if people adore that, thats good !!!! His earned that !!!
Not to say to be adored is something earned !!!
I bet you say to any steel guitarist "Paul Franklin" they would say "wow"
What a player, what a guy !!!
When I go to Nashville In hope to meet Paul again and make a great friend !!!
And please certain people dont hijack this thread, this is not comparing Paul to no one else, just me expressing how Paul is great to me !!!

Paul is not only a world class musician, he has absolutely no inflated ego. I met him at the Station Inn last year, and during the first 'Jumpers' break I approached him while he was still sitting behind his guitar. As I got close to him he just smiled, held out his hand and said "Hi - I'm Paul".
A class act from all perspectives.
I also don't like 'The best in the West' threads because it is ridiculous to say who the best player is. It is completely and utterly subjective. However, PF is in my personal top 3 favourite steel players and I have a top 30 list - all of whom are fantastic. Paul has worked hard to get where he is today. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Yes, I couldn't agree more. I first heard (and saw) Paul on local Kalamazoo tv when he was about 13 or 14 and he was a very "seasoned player" even then. I first saw him "live" at Buck Lake Ranch in Angola Ind in 1971 when he was with Barbara Manadrell. I'll never forget how fresh and innovative his playing was at that time. I remember also the great playing he did on those early Capitol sessions he did at "Pete's Place" in the mid 70's. One to look for is the LP he did with Michgan's Larry Ballard, super playing on this one. IMHO, players like Paul, Tommy White, Buddy Emmons Doug Jernigan and a few others have surpassed being just great steel players, they are in fact incredible, musicians, world class in every respect, tone, taste, style, innovation, improvisation, intonation, etc. Thanks Paul for those musical memories! |

One of the keys to being a really great player at anything is to begin young. There are very few exceptions to that rule. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Who is Paul Franklin?? I have never heard of this player?
Just kidding. I've set up many-a nights trying to play like Paul. I have never met him but I hope I do one day because he is my favorite steel picker. _________________ "Hotrod"

I visited with Pauls parents in their home about 3 years ago and had coffee at their kitchen table. Woody Woodell took me over to meet them. If you have met Pauls parents then you know why Paul is the nice guy that he is. And of course everything that has been said about his great playing is fact. He is on my short list of favorite steel players.

Paul has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the music business in general, and the world of steel guitar in particular. Needless to say, a true icon. |

I walked into the Star Steel Guitar room at the TGSA a few years back. I was told by a friend about Star. I wanted to see one. I went in and a guy was sitting behind a Steel and playing like no one I'd had ever seen. I didn't know who it was at that time. No one was there to help me and I figured he was the owner and I didn't want to bother him. I would return later. The wife and I were sitting behind the stage area and this person walk by. I stopped him and ask if he was the owner of Star, that I had been told to talk to the owner as I was looking for a new Steel. He looked at me and stuck out his hand and explained he was a session player in Nashville, and my name is Paul Franklin. I didn't feel bad because he was such a great person. I felt bad later when I found out who he really was. In fact I felt dumb. I saw him this past Jam and we talked. Such a great guy and he has no big head about anything. After meeting talking to him many times since then you will not find a more helpful and gracious person. He is Human and enjoys helping people and promoting the Steel Guitar. MAC |

Larry Ballard had only one album(released in 1976) and I still have it. When I heard the steel on Honkytonk Heaven I was awe struck: Jimmy Bryant and Paul Franklin twining up a storm with two great individual breaks. Right then I knew this guy was from another planet....what a sound. Peter |

I met Paul few times, and he AND his dad are first class gentleman, both a huge asset to a steel guitar community, Sr. as a builder of amazing instruments and Jr. as a great inovative player...

Hi Jamie,
Your passion and admiration for Paul's playing and a genuinely nice guy is brilliant ,I know how you feel.
Its a great feeling inside to be a fan of someone to the point of thinking that noone else on this planet earth is a bigger fan than me, its a brilliant feeling.
In the mid 60s and some of the 70s when I was about 12 yrs old I was such a big fan of a certain steel guitarist that I wouldnt buy a record if he wasnt playing on it !!
At 12yrs old I thought I must be his biggest fan in the world,I would almost burst when I listened to him but sadly I never met him.
I still have that passion for his playing now but I did start to buy LPs with other steel players on eventually !
when I got my first pedal steel ( I was 23 ) I borrowed the Paul Franklin tuition "styles" tape and fast pickin tape with " lonesome me " on it , his speed blew my mind. Then I bought winnie winstons book, a far easier starting point.
On that speed picking tape Paul said " you know you wont wake up one morning and be able to play fast even if you have the talent" and as someone else said in another post paul has worked hard to be where he deserves to be today.
As for adoration , music is a passion so adoration is fine. |

I haven't seen a recent pic of PF so when the Gaithers' pianist thanked all musicians and mentioned PF's name on the Country and Bluegrass Homecoming I sat up straight - and understood why the PSG playing was so good! A fantastic DVD-set for anyone loving PF / Country / Bluegrass with a Gospel flavour!
Oh yea - and for the first time ever on a Gaither video the PSG takes front-row on stage! |

I had a bit of a chat to Paul at the Dallas show on a couple of occasions and he was very humble, and a generally lovely bloke ! He has always inspired me to attain that next level, and every time I have a flat patch in my playing -- I just put on a bit of Paul's therapy on the CD player! I had George Straits Troubador and Dave Petersons CD on the player all Easter --- spent most of the time grinning I must say ha !!!
Here's a pic of Paul at Dallas playing his new Lacquer Franklin guitar that his Dad just built for him!
