My nephew Richard, a card carrying new country lover who grew up on Garth, Kenny, etc and loved all them posted this blog on his myspace page about the state of country today. He is 30 and is a buyer of music who has an ipod with 3000+ songs of country and rock both. Thought you all would enjoy his take on it after watching the ACMs. I think I've finally got a convert to REAL country music. Very Happy

Posted with Richard Light's permission:

How do I start this off? Country has become to wimpy. Due to Taylor Swift, not knocking her(She's brilliant), but when teeny bopper songs are leading the charts there's a problem. Good Lord we've gone from NSYNC leading the pop charts to friggin teenagers leading the country charts. By the way what hell is Miley Cyrus doing at country award shows, hell any awards show? She's strictly 4 kids. So she needs to stay at Nickelodean/ Disney.

Back 2 country. There are very few artists blowing me away. Have u heard that "Small Town USA", no clue who sings it, but his voice is too twangy and it blows. Toby Keith hasn't lit a fire lately. Garth, please, "I'm retired". Kenny Chesney, who i do like, is almost becoming a cliche and kinda pansy-like. Although his new tune is good. Maybe he'll turn it around. Sugarland, whom at 1 point I did like, is starting 2 annoy me. Mostly Jennifer's voice. At 1st I thought is was strong and good, but lately I just hear way too much strong twang. I know most artists come from the south and have the twang, but sometimes it's too much, especially if you're trying to belt out a tune. Brooks & Dunn hasn't impressed me lately. Jamey Johnson, there's a breath of fresh air, something REAL. Although, I'm not sure I'm diggin' his voice. I could go and on.
But I'll get to my point:
I'm a huge Keith urban fan, love him, esp. live. But damn he's turned into a wimp. His latest CD "Defying Gravity" is all love songs. And yes folks I like love songs, I just don't need a whole CD dedicated to it. The music on the CD sopunds awesome, but then he starts sing these awful, gooey, jr. high love lyrics. OMG! Where r your balls Keith? Shanna suggested he's aiming 4 Taylor's audience cuz it's sellin', perhaps. But you gotta have some guts and something real. For God's sake he was a drug addict, sing about that, the darkness, the recovery, SOMETHNG REAL. Not I wanna kiss you under a tree. Keith even said he memorized Taylor's "Lovestory". Really? You're a 40 something man and you're singing "Romeo save me..." It's a great song, but it's not something a man should be singing. Maybe I'm too harsh. Where's the real country. The MY WOMAN LEFT ME AND/OR MY LIFE SUX SO I'M GONNA GO 2 A BAR(preferably Toostsie's), SHOOT WHISKEY, DRINK BEER, AND WRITE A DAMN COUNTRY SONG ABOUT THAT. And Keith always talkin' about cryin'. Really? Listen I cry from time to time, but it's not something I'm sharing w/ the world or humming a tune to. Thank you to dad and Uncle Roger 4 sharing REAL country music, where the hell is it today? "Romeo save me.
" Oh come on!"

I'm not macho enough to develop a taste for beer and whiskey. I can't stand the stuff. I guess I'd make a lousy cowboy.

I think there is enough room for an upcoming singer like this.....BUT.....not in the Country scene.Like mentioned in another post....they should make a whole new category for these artist(?).
The fact that they broadcast this on National tv under "The Country Music Awards" is the reason why I am so PO'ed.90% of what I have seen (and I turned my set off) does not belong in this category.

A different name for this kind of music would be better and don't call this Country anymore.Because we all know that THIS is not Country music.
PERIOD!

I don't mind southern twang.
What bothers me the exaggerated twang, Jennifer with Sugarland comes to mind.
