The number of steel players names wich come up on the forum are countless, every now and then someone will post a clip of a player who has not had a mention for a while and our memories are triggered.
Sarah Jory has been off the "Steel Scene" for quite a long time now.
She failed to show at Dallas a few Years ago,I think She played at SXSW that year, the following year She had a back injury which made it impossible to be at Dallas,She always played the Irish Steel show at Drogheda but has not been there for a number of years.
Living in the U.K. as I do, I occasionally had the chance to see Her with Her excellent band, alas no more. Her web site is unobtainable.
I know She is touring with Van Morrison, the story I heard some time ago(unconfirmed)was that She said to Her band that She was doing a world tour with Van M. and She would pick them up in a year.
Whilst at Dallas this year I spoke to a close friend of Sarah's and She is doing well.
Will Sarah bounce back to where She left off and be on all the shows again or will the organisers make Her wait a bit. Will the Forum be full of praise and adulation about Her great talent and welcome Her with open arms?
I would have thought it would be good P.R if Sarah had posted here occaisionally to say that She had
not forgotten us.
I,for one miss Sarah.

Billy, I for one hope she is not forgotten, back operations do take some time, I can understand why Buddy Emmons has not been playing or making appearances because he lost his wife and he needs to heal and go through the grieving process. I hope neither one is ever forgotten. Why? Because they are giants of the steel guitar. We miss them and hope they come back someday better than ever.

You know, steel guitar has always represented a "TEAM" effort, from where I stand.
Had it not been for the support of my several wives, I'd not have been free to play whenever/where ever and this was a tremendous source of deep personal enjoyment for me. My present wife enjoys my playing and has made more than one distant trip possible.
NOT forgetting about the artist is one thing......
but how about REMEMBERING the ladies that made it all possible in many different situations?
I'd enjoy seeing a gathering of surviving steel guitar wives: Fran Newman, Mrs. Hal Rug, and since I've never had the pleasure of knowing any of the others on a personal level....the wives/families of
JERRY BYRD, Roy Wiggins, John Hughey, Don Helms, Joaquin Murphy, Speedy West, etc., etc.
I think they each deserve a great big pat on the back. WHAT SAY YOU? |

Billy,
I was trying to find a Sarah Jory Concert to go to last year and came up against the same things. I don't know what it takes to keep going at that level, year in, year out, I do know I couldn't keep it up if it were me.
Here is Sarah as a young girl, behind one of my Guitars at the beginning of the 80s maybe even 1979.
Ken Byng, her teacher may have a few words about where she went from there.

Sarah is a wonderful talent and the few minutes we chatted at St Louis she came across as very pleasant.
Touring with VM was not a mistake but she most likely knew that after a year there would be no way a band would be waiting for her, that would be a first in this business .
We all know of James Taylor, right? We all know of the great bassist Lee Sklar , right ? Well James took a year off and Lee had no gig, so he hooked up with Phil Collins, then James called Lee to come out and gig, Lee said he was already on tour. The story now is James doesn't talk to Lee anymore. Bands and quality players don't wait, they can't. But heck, who knows, maybe...
I suspect when Sarah is good and ready to perform on stage at the Steel shows she will be well received. The problem is once she has seen the big lights with Van it's hard to come back to the Legion, maybe she will pursue another musical career, she has a lot in her tool kit. She can earn a good paycheck and a establish a great reputation with artists like Van, on her own it may be a struggle.
I wish her well whatever she may be doing.

Sarah is no longer on the British country music circuit, and folded up her band some while ago prior to joining the Van Morrison touring band. If she is on a retainer then her job security is guaranteed - something that can't be said for the acts trying to make a living out of playing country stuff in the UK. Many of the clubs that I play at have told me that she (or her advisers) had priced themselves out of the market that she was once in. If the Van Morrison thing goes pear shaped, then she may well struggle to get back on the CM scene enough to make a decent living.
I have long had no contact with Sarah or her family - they have gone their own way, and I am pleased that she has made a living out of her music career and that I played some part in that process. She is one of a number of players that I have taught that have gone on to pro or semi-pro status, and it is gratifying to see.
With regard to Billy's question - she may return to the steel shows at some stage, but I would imagine that she prefers doing what she does currently. _________________ Show Pro D10 - amber (8+6), MSA D10 Legend XL Signature - redburst (9+6), Sho-Bud Pro 111 Custom (8+6), Emmons black Push-Pull D10 (8+5), Zum D10 (8x8), Hudson pedal resonator. Sarah will never be out of work with or without van morrison, there is plenty of stable work here in the U.S.A
[ if she is even working out of the U.S.A] for players of her stability and personality.
I hope she stays here and settles into the family of country music where she belongs, she is a true troubadour and she will be taken very seriously.
I'll bet she's in great hands whevever she is.
