Greetings from the desert. I've been a fan of pedal steel guitar for a long time, and I think I'm getting closer to giving it a try. I'm a life-long guitarist, fan of all types of music and currently in a gigging band. Right now I have a Fender Jaguar, MIM Strat, Fender Super Champ XD and a Weber 5E7 (tweed Bandmaster) clone that I built.
With that out of the way, what are some good books or DVD's for a competent guitarist who wants to get into pedal steel? Something along the lines of Dave Hunter's books, but for steel guitar.
Here's a few pics of my gear- just to make this a little more interesting...

A lot of us (including me) learned from Winnie Winston's book: "Pedal Steel Guitar" published by Oak Publications. However there are many other excellent courses available. Jeff Newman's courses are widely regarded as some of the best teaching material out there. Joe Wright has some DVDs as well.

Hi Mike Henry ( Mr. P too)
The above link address will take you
to the Carter home page. About 1/3 down
the page is a link for 6 string players,
going to pedal steel. Also nose around
the site--a plethora (hmm---how many is
a 'plethora') of great info.

Mike,

That's a sweet amp. I built a 5D8/5E8 that was a monster tone amp.

I am in the East Valley. Send me an email if you would like to check out a guitar before buying.

Hi Mike, Check out the SWSGA website at www.swsteelguitar.com. This is a good way to get to know most of the steel players in the area and I'm sure they would be glad help you get started. I live about 65 miles east of Apache Junction, and although I am not a Teacher, I would be glad to help you all I can. I have several steel guitars set up in my music room and you are welcome to come up and try them out if you would like. None of these guitars are for sale, but it would give you a better idea on what to look for.

Troy

Thanks for the kind words and direction guys. I'm probably going to go back into lurker mode for awhile...

I'm down in Tucson, so it's a little bit of a trek to get to Phoenix.
