I am gearing up to give private lessons for anyone wishing to learn to play pedal steel guitar.
I have been doing this for years in the local area and now I want to reach out to others who care to spend a weekend with me on a one on one situation and really get at the basics of playing.
I am going to charge $350 for the week end. That includes transportation from and to the airport, meals, lodging and of course two days of instruction. If a person drove to Oregon, or stayed in a motel, or brought a box lunch we will adjust the price accordinly.
I focus on learning techniques of how to play, the importance of blocking, playing in pockets, improvising, guitar adjustment, etc. Bring your questions we will find the answers.
Over the years (35) I have helped 35 -40 players get a better handle on how to play, I know I can help you too.
As always, call me, let's talk

I have been so blessed and fortunate to have enjoyed a long steel guitar playing career involving radio, television, dance halls and clubs........playing both lap steel and pedal steel....
that "I'd NEVER THINK of charging a student for lessons".......as long as he/she is truly committed and dedicated to wanting to discover the rich rewards of playing this fabulously beautiful instrument.
"GIVING BACK" is what it's all about! It's the least I could do for an aspiring student.
After 60 years of playing steel guitar and after having taught many, many students the art of playing steel guitar, I'm just thankful that GOD has given me this opportunity to repay. |

Ray this is exactly what I have done for 35 years, but transportation to and from the airport, food for 2 days, lodging and 2 days of instruction should be worth something don't you think?

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with Larry charging for lessons. Larry's knowledge has value. His expertise is the culmination of 35+ years of experience playing steel. His time is valuable as well. Time taken to teach, could be otherwise spent with family, practicing or fulfilling the other obligations in his life.
We pay $$ for tablature, DVD/CD instruction courses, etc, so why not pay for personal lessons? ...... Ray, when is the last time you you took your car to a mechanic and expected him to teach you how to fix it for free? |

My post was not meant to start a controversy........
My post was not intended to be a criticism of LARRY... or anything about his teaching practices.
All of what you say Tony.....is legitimate in every way, I must agree.
I was just making a comment, as viewed from my own perspective. Sorry it offended you. |

No offense taken, Ray.
By the way, it was nice getting a chance to visit with you again at the Portland Steel-o-ganza @ Jubitz' last weekend. .... I'm sorry to hear you're no longer playing out in public. I was looking forward to hearing some great lap-steel. |

Great idea, Larry! I support your idea for offering lessons. A man's time is certainly worth something. Larry has done so much for free for myself and others. If a player wants to get undivided attention and focus, then lessons are the way to go. |

I first meet Larry in 1973..he had been playing a couple years and I had just started with a single 10 Wheeler. I had no idea of how to play this thing or where to go for instruction. Larry got me started on the right tract... tons of information,CDs,tab and one on one lessons. If you are thinking about learning or someone looking for advanced lessons this would be the best 350 dollars you ever spent. |

This is an incredible value: 2 full days of instruction; transportation; meals; lodging...wow! You go, Larry!
And Larry knows his stuff, and I bet he's a great teacher, the testimonials confirm that.
Larry, I'm glad you're so far away, I can't compete with that deal here in L.A.! _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

Thanks guys for the great support, our first steeler (Jeff Massie)is coming from ND in a week. He only has a night or two to spend, but if he has the "fever" I know we can ease the pain.

Very commendable Larry, More people should promote Pedal Steel and encourage personal one on one work shops.
I would come up, but only if I could use a C&W guitar.
Keep up the good work _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

Absolutely true.
The only thing I would like to add to this is how greatful I am to Larry for helping me out when I first started learning how to play pedal steel guitar.
Everytime I've gone to Larry's house, I always leave feeling inspired to keep practicing and trying to improve my skills as a steel guitarist.
