I subscribe to a free on-line magazine called Folkwax, and when I checked my e-mail this morning for the latest issue, there was the first installment of an interview with steel player Eric Heywood, currently of The Pretenders.

I will forgive the interviewer for misspelling Tom Brumley's name as Bromley since we get to read an interview with a fine steel player like Eric - a rarity indeed.

You have to sign up to read it, but it is free, and I have never been "spammed" by anything related to it.

Thanks, Mark. It took a while to find it. I like Eric a lot. I was surprised to hear he is with The Pretenders, who I also like very much. Knowing that Jim Keltner is on the new record, I'll have to run out and buy it.

I originally provided a link that would take you right to the interview, except it also included my e-mail in-box! Whoa!

Mark, thanks for posting this. I like Eric Heywood's tone because, unlike a lot of steel players, he usually dials in a lot of tube grit. But his playing style is creamy and smooth. It's an interesting combination.

I feel silly, but I cannot seem to find the interview... Is there a search function on the website?

I'm a huge fan of EH. Everything he's played on Son Volt records makes the hair on my arm stand up.

Here is a direct link to the article so that you don't have to fish around for it on the Folkwax website:

I just saw a broadcast of Farm Aid, with the Pretenders on it.
All I can say is WOW, the steel fits perfect with their material. Hearing some of those old Pretender hits, with what Eric was playing, makes you wonder why he wasn't in the band 25 years ago.
