Well, someone has finally decided to use Skype as an online teaching source.

Using Skype for teaching music actually does work very well. I have been working with a fellow in Hawaii taking lessons on a pan flute for almost a year. As long as one has a high speed hook up, a higher end web cam and half decent speakers, it works like a charm.

Now if I played pedal steel I would take you up on it Mickey. I play a D10 and a D8 non-pedal (along with a few other instruments).

Way to go Mickey. My friend, Greg Wisecup and I have been using Skype for a short while to share ideas and teach each other what the other doesn't know. Wouldn't it be the cats meow, if it could be used as an online, real time, class room situation. One instructor with many students, sort of a conference call, material to be covered and times posted on the forum. Instructor could accept the calls as prearranged and compensated. Questions could be typed in and covered by the instructor as needed. I'm not sure if Skype has this(conference) capability, but one on one instruction is wonderful. My hat's off to you Sir, again your ahead of the game using every possible means to teach this wonderful instrument. My best to you...Dick S.

Dick, Skype has conferencing capabilities but the video windows are not all that big and the sound is not up to snuff for a steel guitar. Skype is suited much more for one on one teaching.

The problem you may be faced with with a steel guitar are the mellow tones of your playing. As I mentioned, Skype's sound reproduction is not geared for high end listening.

What I did was record my lessons on my video camera and mailed them via an E-mail attachment to my pan flute teacher in Hawaii. For the lessons themselves however, Skype worked like a charm.

Thanks Les, I'm sure your right about the quality. I was thinking more on the line of just passing the info. As it is, with the lack of sound quality as you suggest, will not take the place of face to face instruction. I think we're not far off though...It works perfectly for what my friend and I are doing...Just trading licks and passing information. Dick S.

Patricia and I did some testing last night. It appears that most computer mics are extremely sensitive. Feedback loops can be limited by using a headset of course...As soon as I tweak my settings and get some feedback , ill post....thank everyone...Mickey

Les...great to hear someone is using Skype for lessons...

Been using Skype and ICHat AV for lessons since the first of the year. The only drawback is the fact that most are using their computer mic for sound which is next to the speakers. The mic picks up my audio from their speakers and can loop...

My set-up avoids this by using a headset mic and steel guitar direct into Pro Tools. The output is sent to an DV converter so my sound is controlled. To avoid the loop you would need a small mixer to run the mic and steel into and then output that to Skype. I take the output of the steel/vox and run it into the sound-in on my mac. (IChat Av will utilize the output of the DV converter, SKype needs the sound direct into the sound-in on the Mac)

My video feed is 10 cameras into an analog mixer that I use to change the shot(s). I can also do picture-in-picture with the mixer. (Each camera is also firewired to a computer and can be recorded separately. I can then edit them together on a DVD.)

ALso, I record both sides of each lesson. There are programs out there that allow you to do this. The Skype recordings are Quicktime movies with each video in a side-by-side window. Uploading a sample today at the url below.

I'd like to say thanks to Mickey for your YouTube lessons. I must admit I've been a peeping "Tom" or maybe I should say "Don" on this site for a little over a year now. I attended the Dallas show a couple of weeks ago and when I left I was the proud owner of a new Carter top of the line D-10 why at my age of 54 I did that I'm still trying to figure that one out (but hopefully my creditors will understand) other than I love the sound of the steel guitar. Here's the problem I don't even know how to play one but I am bound and determined to learn and thanks to Mickey I'll have Cold Cold Heart down within a couple of months I hope. You guys and gals on the forum seem to be a tight nit family in which I admire, always sharing something. So hopefully I'm not like an old dog and can learn new licks.
Thanks and keep up the great work.
