Aloha All,
Well, I'm taking a big step and posting my first attempt at a recording. My name is Dave Soreff, and I've been lurking for quite a bit of time, and have really picked up some wonderful information and tips here. You've all been very kind to beginners, with encouragement and helpful suggestions, so I thought I'd make a quick recording my homework from my teacher and let y'all listen. It's "A Million Moons Over Hawaii":

I feel a little trepidation, because I've heard Gerald Ross' great version, but it's what I'm working on, so I thought what the heck. It's the Jerry Byrd arrangement, with a few variations. (At this point, I'm a little limited as to what liberties I can take LOL)
I've been playing about six months now, and am very lucky to have a wonderful teacher, Alan Akaka. He is very patient, and has opened up my ears to all sorts of new music. I am playing a Rickenbacher B6, which I love, and am just really enjoying the discoveries I make each day. Both what I can do, and what I need to work on.

David,
I would love to have heard this clip, but I don't have Apple Quicktime installed on my PC. Its very intrusive as a program and invades every sound module on the PC so I don't have it. Maybe better to offer an MP3 or You Tube movie that everyone can use if you intend doing more work.

Aloha,
Firstly, big mahalos for all the positivity on my posting. I apologize for those who are having problems with the Mac site, and also for those who don't wish to use the Apple player. I understand...no worries. I am working to resolve the problem, and once I have a few spare hours, I will post it up to YouTube, as that seems a pretty good solution.
In the meantime, check back in a day or so if you are having problems getting to the clip, and it should be resolved. Thanks for checking in, and again, mahalo nui loa for the good words.

David,
You have made a lot of progress in 6 months. You have a master teacher in Alan Akaka who has probably helped your technique quite a bit. That definitely helps, but you have to have a feel for the music, which you have. A job well done. 
You have a future in Hawaiian steel, so keep up the good work. 
Since you live on the Big Island, you might want to come to the HSGA Convention in Honolulu, April 28-30.
You could even play. You would find everyone very supportive of you. If you didn't want to play, you could still enjoy a lot of Hawaiian Steel guitar.

Yes, Alan has helped me very much with technique, but what he actually spends most of our time on is the interpretation of the pieces we work on. Showing me how he and other players might approach a phrase or figure. He is kind of zen in many ways...but it works just fine for me. I surely appreciate the compliments and good wishes.
I have the Big Island listed as home, but I actually spend about 11 months of the year working for Princess Cruises. Luckily though, we, (my wife/duo partner) and I will be off during the convention. Even better. we are planning on being on O'ahu for May Day....so I will probably drop by the park to see some great steel guitar.
Truthfully, I'm not sure if I'm ready quite yet to perform for HSGA, (although I do gig with my steel each day on the ship...Alan encouraged me to start playing onstage ASAP) but you can count on my being there for the next one in Hawaii.

I believe that is good advice. The sooner the better. It is normal to have the jitters. The quicker you break the ice, the more freedom you will begin to feel. As I was saying, newcomers get a lot of support. You will feel their support when you play the first time. Every steel guitarist in the crowd knows what you are going through, because they went throught it once.
