My cousin has a Peavey Vegas 400 amp and is considering parting with it. Its always been used as a rhythm amp but I suspect it would be great for steel. Has a 15" Black Widow speaker and seems well suited for the job. I use a Peavey Stereo Chorus 400 myself. Any thoughts or opinions on its use as a steel amp or even the value?

Frank, the Vegas 400 is a very good Steel, Fiddle, Guitar or KeyBoard Amp. 210 watts of "Clean" power.
I have seen them priced on here from $300 to $450.00.
Here is a link that will be helpful to you I believe.

Thanks Roger... I'll check it out. My cousin may ask that I post it for him here.

Buddy Emmons used one for YEARS. It is very similar to the original Session 400. Sounds GREAT for steel.

By far the best steel amp Peavey ever made. Wish I could buy a new one. I have had 3 over the years. Don't plan on being without as long as I play steel.

I agree! I've had one for 25 years. I now use it for lessons and practice, and I play a Steel King on gigs. The Vegas 400 has a very warm tone, far superior to any of Peavey's other steel amps... and I've owned all of them. Winking

Here's a thought... as I mentioned on the post, I use a Peavey stereo chorus 400 for my steel. One channel for steel and I use the second channel for my lead guitar work. It mulit-functions for both guitars when I gig. Would I be better served using the Vegas? If so, he might trade me. I've never tried the Vegas. Any thoughts?

Frank:

I have one now as well as several other. If you can trade i'm sure you will be happy. At least for steel . Don't see why it wouldn't make a good guitar amp as well. It has 2 channels.

I used the Vegas 400 for years I sold it and a Session 400 a few years back to Jeff Peterson when he was working at Steel Guitar Nashville
They were both great amps but I was amp poor at the time and didn't use them any more.

For what it's worth (not much) but after I bought a Nashville 400, which was all the rage at the time, I was in Herb Remington's shop in Houston and mentioned that I was not real happy with the sound. He said I should have got the Vegas. He said that it was very similar electronically speaking, to the Nashville, but it was in a larger cabinet and sounded better. I think you will be in good shape with the Vegas, based on what Herb said.

I have a Vegas 400 and I think it's a great amp. I use one channel for steel and the other for lead guitar. It's not light though, so I use a Nashville 112 for smaller jobs. Larry

I still have one and if it were not for the weight, that is what I would be using all the time.

Thanks for the advise. I'll give it a try and go from there... if I like it, maybe he'll trade me. A couple of things I like about the chorus is the distortion feature. I use this somewhat for my lead work (when I do the heathen rock & roll stuff). And of course the "chorus effects". Guess I'm just used to the versatility of the chorus amp. Again... I'll give it a test run... thanks again.
